So, making programs that focus on eating healthy instead of focusing on weight would be the ideal way to go. I believe we can all agree to that. Such programs would probably make many people weigh less too, as that's still a correlated variable.
HALLELUJAH, YES!! !! !

Reminds me of a medical conference where one lecturer said how at one time physician's would give out tension-lowering medicaments, because high-tension was correlated with health risks. It took them a while to realize that high-tension was a symptom of something else, and that these medicaments where doing more harm than good. Programs aimed at being less fat would not be as useful as programs aimed to being more healthy.
Shat - you're getting closer.
Ideally a program you focus on both acceptance and health. It should not be one to the exclusion of the other.
Exactly.
If we're going to preach health and be logically-consistent:
Everyone should focus on self-love and healthy habits, IE, POSITIVE motivation.
For those who are overweight/obese, that might mean weight is lost.
If not, who cares- we're focused on health, aren't we?
But on a societal level we're not willing to do this.
We're not willing to indict the industrial food complex, endocrine-disrupting emissions from industry, healthy foods being an economic privilege as opposed to a right, powerful agra/pharma lobbies essentially free-handedly writing public health policy, etc.
No, the fatties are just lazy, worthless, and stupid.
That's actually one of the better techniques that I have seen used and a technique that is used in this video. P90X is a great foundation for people who are looking to lose weight and it is an ideal start as it teaches a variety of exercises, it is a high intensity program but it's definitely one of the best for weight loss.

Self love can work but you need to maintain a strong amount of discipline or motivation and you will feel an immense reward when you do achieve your goals. Focusing on the positive benefits or the reward is a great motivator when it comes to working out and it's definitely a good way to push yourself.
You definitely need to be able to motivate yourself and keep discipline though, you have to learn to find pleasure in pain if you truly want to succeed.

Strong motivation can come intrinstically if they find something they love that they are willing to put long term results above short term.
It doesn't have to be all about discipline - discipline doesn't work for everyone. For those who for whatever reason have tried at this in the past and it hasn't worked - many argue they don't have enough discipline. Maybe they don't. But maybe they don't respond to "discipline" period, and therefore no amount of it will work. It's always better to work with yourself than against yourself. Finding the place their motivation (god I hate that word) comes from and using it to their advantage is more important.
I know I respond very poorly to any kind of external motivation - positive or negative. I also respond quite poorly to internal negative or positive motivation - the fact that one of my major interests is related to fitness and that it is in my best interest to be fit for that is what keeps me on track - I often go above and beyond what I need (and beyond what everyone else does) to do for it rather than doing the bare minimum.

do you work for them, or are you receiving kickbacks of any sort?
EDIT: that includes the title of "coach" as that is what the multi-level marketing recruiters are called. it is a pyramid scheme.

well, the issue is that they essentially need to have superhuman motivation or drive in order for the programs to work. they can't just be as motivated as a never-obese person or a thin-to-muscular person. they essentially have to do the equivalent of kicking a cocaine habit by snorting less cocaine every day... but never totally giving it up.
so the expectations and judgement that come from people who have not been in their shoes is quite unfair. some people will simply never have addiction problems due to a variety of factors. those people cannot understand what it feels like to have an addiction of some kind, nor can they understand what it feels like to try to end the addiction.
(brain scans of drug addicts and many overeaters are identical, and a majority of obese people have been shown to have higher rates of all addiction in their family).
what you speak of as "long term results" can work if the person has their own internal goals (i.e. lowering blood pressure so they can walk to the store more comfortably), as it focuses on real-life scenarios that are important to them.

Agreed Hyper - you would be surprised at some of the addictiveness levels of things people consume on a daily basis - withdrawl though them is not fun, I know that first hand.
I'm not judging them - quite the opposite.
I just dislike the viewpoint that "discipline" will magically solve everyone's problems for them - it's not going to work for 100% of poepl 100% of the time (real rates naturally much lower than that).

i completely agree with you. i watched someone dear to me cry while she was eating ice cream because she felt unable to stop. she was a special case in that she was taking a medicine that caused weight gain in nearly 50% of patients, but she had issues prior to taking that medicine. watching her in that state was very upsetting.
In other news, up is is now down, and black will henceforth be known as "white".
Most women look good for each other and not just for men. It's really no different than a cat grooming it's fur to look nice.
On a side note, I don't get why men are expected to carry an unnaturally low body fat percentage and at the same time carrying lots of muscle--whereas a woman can look like an actress by not exercising at all.

I don't think that's strictly true. True, women are not expected to have the same muscle mass as many people like to see in men (though personally I don't get the muscular thing), but I think you'll find most female celebrities will still be toned. Particularly the abs. If you lack muscle definition in that area, you can be very skinny, even underweight, and still have a "tummy bulge" just because of the shape of the internal organs.

Yeah. "A" woman can- good for her, wherever she is.
For the rest of us, not so much.

I didn't say that everyone could; for this to be the case, you'd have to remain in a calorie equilibrium and you'd also need enough estrogen to have a curvy body and feminine facial features. With that being said, most women can obtain the same body fat levels without starvation, but with low-intensity training a couple of times a week combined by NOT eating junk food and NOT binge drinking every weekend.
If a guy wants to look like Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale or basically any man that's presented to the men as the ideal, a lot more work is needed.

Actually, most women would be equally toned at a low body fat level. Victoria's Secret models are deliberately kept at a low muscle level--which is one of the main reasons why they're unhealthy. Honestly, their body fat levels are in the lower end of the 20's, which is why many of them look quite scrawny.
