The Sport/motorsport of remote control auto racing
Round 2 RCGT Showdown Huntington Beach,CA
My dad and I practiced for this race ever since the first round for the RCGT showdown at West Coast raceway, my dad and I to the track at 8 am on Easter day. The track was just being setup and the track was being prepped with VHT (a chemical that makes the track grip better) once the rack was setup and VHT was spayed down, I got out on to the track and did and few practice runs getting the car setup tweaked to my likening. Once I was finished with practice the racers had a drivers meeting to explain the rules of the race today. After that was finished, everyone got ready for the first qualifier for round 2 of the RCGT series.
Qualifier one
I am sitting 6th on the grid, the tone sounds and everyone scurries to the first corner. I pick off my opponents one by one, then I go after the leader, Hiro Kasuya, a factory sponsored racer originally from Japan. For the entire race me and him are neck and neck I wait for him to make a mistake but he stands his ground, one lap I got under him and passed him but he took it right back and got under me on the next corner. Four minutes into the race I try to get on the inside of him but I accidentally spin him around and I have to wait him to catch up to me or else I would be called for a stop and go penalty. Two racers go by as well but I’m able to get by them two laps later, for the rest of the race me and Hiro duke it out for first place and I try to get by him but time expires and he is able to out qualify me by 11 hundredths of a second
Qualifier two
This time the grid is reversed and for some reason I am sitting third on the grid and Hiro is 5th, as the race begins I work my way through traffic and as I get by I battle it out with Calving Simmons, one off the local talented racers. We then duke it out and then Hiro catches up to us as well, coming into the infield two minutes in the race, I got a little wide and he gets right under me and passes me for second and then I get by Calvin Simmons and go after Hiro, this race is just as similar as the first as we battle for the lead and the TQ position, many times I try to get on the inside of him and I tap his rear end a few time and get his car a little tail happy but nothing much, I’m still right behind Hiro with minute to go, and still I cannot squeak past him. As time expires I try to pass Hiro on the backstretch to the finish line but he beats me by 8 hundredths of a second, I am qualified second coming into the A main event with Hiro Kasuya taking TQ honors.
A main
With me sitting second behind Hiro, I am feeling good about this next race because my car is handling very good and I have a good chance of winning. Right now, I have to focus putting the pressure on and not make any mistakes, the race begins and I have good handling car and I’m right on Hiro’s tail. On the Second lap Hiro goes wide and I try to get under him but I bump him out of he way a have to let him by while two other cars go by me, 4 turns late the two other cars get into Hiro and I go by and focus on the leader. For 4 minutes I try to reel in the 1st place and I inch up close and closer every lap. With 5 minutes into the race coming into the infield, I get under the leader and then the leader tries to cut under me but cuts and corner and flies over me nearly taking me out, and I then begin to build a lead. With two minutes left I decide to slow down and let Hiro catch up to me because I wanted to make up for the unintentional hit. I don’t let him catch up completely, only for 5 or 6 car lengths and then I tell him “Lets dance Hiro!” For the remainder of the race Hiro and me dual it our for the win, he inches closer and closer trying to put the pressure on me on the last lap coming onto the backstretch, Hiro tried to get under me but turns in too tight and rolls it over and I go on to win Round two of the RCGT showdown.
5 minutes after the race I noticed people talking in the background about some shaking and people said that we were having an earthquake, I didn’t notice any shaking in the background but I did hear a lot of commotion from racers around the pit area. It would be the same earthquake that was near Baja, Mexico.
Thanks again for reading my Round Two RCGT Showdown race report, my next race is This April 18th at the Hobbytown Corona parking lot in Corona, CA
Round 3 RCGT Showdown Hobbytown Corona, CA
My dad and I got up early in the morning to head out to Corona, CA for Round 3 of the RCGT showdown. The racetrack is setup and located in a parking lot in a Corona mall complex. Once we got there we setup our pit area and did a few practice runs to get the car setup to our liking. After that there was a drivers meeting, then everyone got ready for the first round of qualifying.
Round One
I’m sitting 2nd on the grid behind Hiro, as the race beings Hiro and me are close together. For two minutes it’s a constant tug of war between Hiro and I, with 4 minutes into the race Hiro gets into traffic and makes a mistake, and I go by to take the lead. Hiro catches up to me two laps later and him and me duke it out as he tries to get under me but to no avail, half way through the race Hiro gets under me and takes the lead back, I then got right after Hiro again. With one minute remaining Hiro and me are inches apart trying to get an advantage on either of us. As time expire on the last lap I try to get under Hiro at the finish line on the last turn, but he its able to beat me by two tenths of a second
Round two
With the grid reversed I am sitting 3rd out of 4 racers with Hiro behind me. As the race starts, I wait patiently for the other racers to make a mistake in front of me but Hiro on the second lap gets under me and passes me for first then, after that I pass the other racers for second. This time the race is not as close, I try to keep up with Hiro-San for the TQ however he seems to be on his game today. It’s a constant tug of war between Hiro and I for the entire race me and Hiro and me are separated by more a than second, and that is how it finishes. As time expires and I take the second position and Hiro takes TQ honors again.
A main
I’m sitting second on the grid behind Hiro and in this race I’m making sure not to win the race due to the fact that If I do go on to the win the race I will get a 50 gram weight penalty and me and my dad have no more room to place weight on our car so I made sure that I would not win the race so that would not happen. The race starts out with and Hiro and me separated by two tenths of a second, on the third lap I brush one of the corners, which slows me down a bit then I go right after Hiro. We dice our way through traffic as the race progresses, Calvin Simmons is right on my tail challenging me for second I couldn’t afford to let Calvin by me. Halfway through the race he makes a mistake and clips a corners and I gain some distance on him, now I focus on Hiro. With a minute to go into the race he clips one of the barriers on the track and gets them loose and I’m now right on his tail with one lap to go I’m right on his bumper but time expires and Hiro goes on to win round 3 of the RCGT showdown.
After the race, creator of the RCGT showdown came up to us s saying that he would reduce the minimum weight from 1450 grams to 1400 grams and would reduce our weight that I already had for the weight penalty from 1500 to 1450, Hiro’s was reduced too from 1550 to 1500. So in the next round of the RCGT showdown, everyone would have a lesser weight to deal with than in previous rounds.
Thank you for reading my Round 3 RCGT showdown down race report, my next race report is the ROAR (Radio Operated Auto Racers) Region 12 On road championship in Camarillo ,CA. Stay tuned!
ROAR Region 12 On Road Championship/ Road Runners Raceway/ Camarillo,CA
My dad and I made a 2 hour long trip to the racetrack from Laguna Niguel, we arrived there around noon had a talk with the local racers then setup our pit area then we charged up some batteries, after that we began our practice of the day. I learned the track, learned where to take my driving lines and making adjustments to the car, My motor blew up once in practice but luckily I had Ron Schurr of Team Icon Motors to help me fix the motor up and get running again. After we got our car dialed in (working pretty well) My dad and I decided to pack up for the day and head to the hotel for the night
I am racing in the RCGT class, this class uses sports car body shells like Ferraris, Porches, Mustangs, Lotuses, or anything that resembles a sports car. There are no sedan bodies allowed, also a special type for X pattern, treaded tire is to be used in the class, no slick tires are to be allowed.
The next day me and dad woke up packed our stuff up and headed for the track, we setup our pit area go out for a few practice runs, My fastest lap in practice is 6 tenths of a second faster than the fastest racer. Which is a lot. After practice everyone assembles for a drivers meeting. Once that is completed. The first round of qualifying begins.
Round 1
Lucky, for my random starting position for the first round of qualifying, I am starting first on the grid. I get off to a very good start in the first qualifier. For most of the race I have almost a lap lead on the entire field, the announcer even joked saying that I had KERS on-board (KERS stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System which is a device they used on Formula 1 cars during the 2009 season to give a brief 50-60 more horsepower) at the at the end of the race, I end up winning by almost a lap but the computer said that I ended up 3rd. I went to the time sheet after the race and found out that my car didn’t count a lap, my dad told the race director about this and he immediately fixed this, So I was position #1 on the first qualifier
Round 2.
This was pretty much the same as the first. My car was very well hooked up and handling great, but everyone else is slower for some reason in this round compared to the first, it’s no big deal though because I ended winning qualifier two by almost a lap and keep TQ. There was however some stubborn traffic that would not get out of my way though.
Round 3
This was my fastest qualifier yet, my fastest lap was in the 14-second range where everyone else was in the 15’s and 16’s, I made no mistakes as usual and my car in still doing well. I end up improving my time by more than 7 seconds.
A main
As I start on the front row of the A main final I tell myself to get off to a good start because if I do I will have a very good chance of winning. The tone sounds and everyone files up into the first turn and then I begin to pull away. Every lap I gain a half a inch on my competitors and gain distance on them more and more, half way through the race as a I come up on a slower racer, he spins out in front of me and I hit him head on, it wacks my straight-line stability off by a bit, however, I slow down in a hairpin corner a bit and do a slight tap to the right on the steering trim button on my transmitter and my car is driving straight as an arrow once again. My dad had a big scare due to the fact that he thought my car broke after I hit the lapped car. It didn’t matter, due to the durability of my Xray T3 touring car chassis, I ended up taking the RCGT championship by almost a half a lap.
Thank you for reading my ROAR region 12 race report. My next race will be coming up soon and plan to do a race report on that as well.
