RCGT Showdown, Round 4, TQ raceway, Chino, CA

Four days before the race, my dad and I practiced at TQ raceway where we would go on set a lap record the for the RCGT expert class. When we got to the track, we practiced for 4 hours to get the car setup right then had a drivers meeting, then got ready for the race. Hiro Kasuya, the points leader, and Calvin Simmons, one of my other rivals, that is behind me on points, were not present for the 4th round of the series, which gave me a good chance to win and get some points. This time the track is an indoor ozite carpet on road facility, instead of a parking lot and outdoor asphalt racing track.

Round one.

My starting position for the first round is third, as the race starts, one racer clips one of the corners and I go by for second, with one lap almost complete, one of the racers transmitter is blocking my view and I can’t see one of the corners and I accidentally take out the leader, then I have to wait for him to catch up and pass by as well as the three other cars, the race resumes and I’m able to pass the other two cars while they mess up and I go after first. The leader and I battle it out for the lead for at least two and a half minutes, I inch closer to him every lap but I can’t get by him, then he hits a board and I go by him and never look back and end up winning the first qualifier.

Round two.

The race starts off with me and 2nd place in a close battle for 3 minutes however 2nd place taps the corners a few times and I’m able to pull away and win the second qualifier and take Top Qualifier by almost a lap.

A main

With me on the TQ position, I have a good chance of me winning the A main final, as the tone is about to sound, one of the cars in the back of the grid launches off the line and there is a false start. Everyone has to regrid again, the next tone sounds and the race starts off without a hitch. 2nd place is able to hang with me for a few minutes but after that I’m able to pull away for the rest of the race, there was one lap where I hit a board lightly but I was able to recollect myself and make no more mistakes for the rest of the race. I go on the win the A main by nearly the same margin as the second qualifier.

My next race will be in Union City, CA, near San Francisco, for the 2010 Reedy Race Of Champions. A lot for racers from around the world will be attending this race. I leave tomorrow for the race.

Reedy Touring Car Race Of Champions May 27-30 2010 Union City, CA USA.

My dad and I made the 6 hour drive up to Union City, CA which is south of San Francisco, where we arrived around 4:30 PM. We got to take a look at the track to see how it was setup and talked to a few racers after awhile then we left the track and headed to the hotel and went to bed. The next morning was the very first day of practice, We had a short drivers meeting at the beginning, then after that came the first round of practice, in my first round I knew that I was off the pace of the fast drivers at the very beginning. I was a full second slower on my fast lap than from the leader. Another thing to mention is that it also rained for 10 minutes on the track and the track had to be dried off and resprayed which didn’t help ether. After it stopped raining and the track was dried off I got out there for my second practice run which was better but still I was of the pace a bit. On my last practice run of the day, I improved, but me and my dad still had some work to do because our car was not handling as well as the front runners. The next day me and my dad asked the one of the professional racers that was sitting next to us for help on our car, he told us to do an adjustment that would help the car handle a little better, and it did. Throughout the day my times steadily improved and at the end of the last round of practice for the weekend I ended up 7th overall out of 53 racers in the 17.5 motor class. I felt pretty good!

The next day, Saturday, was qualifying, qualifying at the Reedy Race Of Champions in the 17.5 motor class is based off of points, if you have the fastest time in one round you get 0 points, finish 2nd and you get 2 points, third, 3, etc. Your two best out of four rounds count. The driver with the least amount of points in the best two out of four rounds is the Top Qualifier. In case of a tie, they go to your fastest overall time you drove in six minutes out of the four qualifying rounds.

Round one

My car was starting to handle pretty good and continuing to improve even after in practice. As always, I’m driving smooth and consistent trying not to make any mistakes, my fastest time in all 6 heats of 17.5 touring is 6th overall out of 53 racers.

Round two

This was actually my fastest round of the weekend, I started out very strong in with me being on a pace that is good enough for me to take the TQ however I get held up by a slower racer that is not letting faster traffic, like me by. This slows my time down, but end up taking TQ, however in the next heat after me another racer takes it from me cause he was in a faster heat that no one held him up. The good news is I end up taking second overall for the second round.

Round three

This last round was very close between the top three racers (including me). We were separated by 1 second and constantly we are dueling it out for the lead. I almost take the lead in this round on one lap, however my paced slowed down a bit and during the end of the round, I had to let one of the other racers who was faster than I was by. He would end up taking the TQ position and wining the round, with me ending up third overall.

After the round my motor went through tech and was later disqualified for some reason, which shocked me quite a bit. My dad told this to one my motor tuners and explained what happened and he told my dad to get my motor teched again because there was there was a mistake. On my motor, solider was smeared on two of the three motor tabs, which caused and inaccurate and false voltage reading on one of the devices that was used to check the motor. My dad then told this to the tech crew and told them to check the motor again. This time I passed with flying colors and my round was saved. Now I have 5 total combined points out of my two best round (rounds 2 and 3,) which places me 3rd overall in qualifying so far. I gave my motor sponsor a big hug and told him thank you for getting me and my dad out a a pickle, my dad and I happily went to bed with a smile on our face as we got ready for the final round of qualifying the next day.

Round four.

This round was a little rough, competition truly heated (or should say volcanoed up) in this round everyone on stepped up there “A” game and was starting to improve on their six minute overall time. There was one point where I go into a scuffle in traffic which reduced my performance of the round, at the end of round of I ended up finishing 7th overall which was my worst result of qualifying so far however my two best rounds still count and the first and last rounds are thrown out and I have a total of 5 points which puts me third on the grid for 17.5 touring, which is A huge accomplishment.

In the A main finals there are three races that are run, if you the are first in the A main you get 100 points, if you come 2nd you get 99, if you third, 98, and so on, your two best rounds count. The racer with the two best rounds with the most amount of points is the overall winner of the class.

A main 1

With me starting 3rd on the grid, I am feeling pretty good about the outcome of this race. As the tone sounds and I’m heading into the infield, I drive a little wide and the 4th place racer, Keith Yu of Canada taps me from the rear and spins me around and I get taken out by the other racers in the process and I get shuffled to the back. Keith Yu is called for rough driving then gets sent to the penalty box, a spot on the track before the straight for 5 seconds then rejoins the race. Now I am way behind at the back of the pack and my car is not handling well and is very loose on-off acceleration. Halfway through the race my motor overheats and seizes up and I get hit from the rear as my car stops, I get a DNF for the race, and end up last.

A main 2

This round was a little better but it still was a trying A main. I got off to a good start in the beginning and more than half way on the first lap, I try to get under second and then we rub fenders a bit, then I get by however one of the fenders on my car gets caught on my tire for a second and I lose the position gets as well as two others. I then try to hunt down the other two racers, halfway through the race I get under a racer for third but three turns later he takes me out and there is no penalty called however he does wait for me and let me by, what I really wanted to happen was the racer who rear ended me, to be sent into the penalty box. Time expires and I end up taking 4th.

A main 3

The race ruined my entire weekend. As the race starts and everyone heads in the first turn, I get taken out by the same racer (Keith Yu) in the first A main and sends me back to the back of the pack. Keith is called for a penalty and heads to the box, but I was very upset. I am in a 3 way battle for 6th and I’m waiting for the racers to make a mistake, or for me to make my move. Coming into the S curves there is a pile up and car gets sideways and I hit him head on, which breaks a part on my car, casing my car to push out wide turning left. As I come into the chicane I push out wide and violently hit the outside wall, which forces me to not finish the third A main.

As the points are being tallied up my final position is 8th place which is not bad but I could have ended up better had I not had the misfortune that I had. I was feeling quite disappointed, however the next day after the race my parents went to a friend of my dad’s house near San Francisco and had a barbecue dinner for the American Memorial Day Holiday and got to have a nice conversation about what happened during the race weekend, and other numerous topics. This cheered me up a bit. Then the next day me and my parent’s drove home to Southern California and got to see the coast line.

Thank you very much for reading my race report of the 2010 Reedy Touring Car Race Of Champions, my next race is the last round of the RCGT showdown, at the end of July. The race date will be announced.

Today, i am going to explain the rules of the Tamiya America 6 hour mini enduro.

Since there are alot of rules to this race i will only explain the rules that are the most important and are easy to follow.

A minimum of 3 racers and a maximum of 5 are a allowed for each team, there wil be sixteen teams with a total of sixteen cars on the track at the same time.

A 15 minute qualfying session will take place before the race, each racer can come in and come out during this time period to make adjustment to his/her car when trying to go for the fastest lap possible. How fast your best lap is will determine where you start on the grid.

There is no weight limit and there is no motor RPM limit. There is no need for weighing down your car, or keeping your motor at a certain speed.

No driver may run more than twice during the enduro.

The car that starts the race must finish the race. No car can be swapped, however parts can be replaced.

Tamiya America 6 hour Mini Enduro July 17 2010 Orange County, CA

My dad and I arrived at the track around 7:00am to meet up with our team, the team took turns driving the car and getting it adjusted to our likings. At first the car was a little loose off power when turning right, this means that the rear end will want to swing out on you only on right hand turns. Also our team captain had not showed up yet which meant we had to begin qualifying without him. Here’s how qualifying works, qualifying is 15 minutes long and your fastest lap count, the driver with the fastest lap at the end of 15 minutes is the winner, drivers can come in for pit stops and adjust their car or put a fresh battery in just to get the best lap possible, our team ended up qualifying 2nd, we had a strong start in the beginning and had the fastest lap but we at the end, were passed up at and had to settle for the 2nd fastest time. 5 minutes before the race began our team captain showed up and we were all disappointed in him not showing up before qualifying and asked where he was, after his explanation, everyone lined up to the position they earned on the stating grid and got ready for the 6 hour enduro.

As the race started and on the first lap our team captain was very impatient at the start and nearly took out the leader by pushing him sideways allowing third to get by. 3 minutes later our captain makes many more mistakes, which drops us all the way down to 6th or 7th, as the race progresses we manage to work our way up to 5th.

I have seemed to have made an error on explaining the rules before. When explaining the rules in one of my previous posts, I said the no driver must run more that two times, actually the rules said that every driver must race no more than two battery packs on the drivers stand then you have to wait until everyone on your team has had their turn on the stand, then you may race again. My apologies, anyway, back to the report.

My turn comes up, when I drive out of the pits I get into a bit of a tangle up with two other cars but then I move along then begin my drive. During the run I am able to weave my way through traffic and avoid potential accidents which I’m able to get my team up to third. Almost all the way through my second battery pack, the timing and scoring freezes up and shuts down and the race has to be stopped. Everyone on the track has to keep their car in the same position that they were on the track when the race was stopped, for 20 minutes the track crew works on the timing and scoring to get it rebooted, and once the laps have been recounted on the computer, the tone sounds and racing resumes. 5 minutes later the system crashes again and has to be rebooted again, this time the race has to be restarted on the starting grid, once everyone is lined up, the tone sounds and everyone bunches up coming into the sweeper and I’m able to maintain our third place position. I then come into the pits and I hand off the radio to my teammate, Jeremy, a RC Off road racer. Throughout the hours, our team once climbs up to 2nd, then 1st, and then third, pit stops between teams are one of the main factors that move up one team or send them down. Our team now is driving much more cautious, passing cleaner and letting drivers who could be a threat of taking our car out through. In endurance racing there is no rule about letting faster traffic by, you must find a way past slower traffic, it is up to the slower racer ahead of you to move over and let you by. With an hour left to go, my turn is up and I rush onto the drivers stand. I drive cautious and clean for my last two remaining battery packs there are a few times that I get taken out from the rear and one the one of the track marshals (a person that flips your car over if you are upside down) runs out onto the track and I run into his foot which makes me lose time, but I’m able to make it up. After I pull it into the pits I give the radio to the team captain, Brandon, and he drives the remaining 30 minutes of the race, their are some battles he get into and there is a few times he gets into an accident, but he is able to maintain his cool and finish the race with the car in one piece as time expiries.

Since the race had to stopped due to a malfunction in the timing and scoring, the times from the race before the glitch, and the times after the glitch had to be added up to get the full accurate result of who finished in which place for the entire 6 hours, as he results were finally tallied, our team finished third on the podium. We each received a bronze medal and some nice tools for wrenching on our cars. There is a possibility that a second enduro is to be run sometime in the fall so I will keep you posted on that.

Thank you for reading my race report, I welcome comments and I will be glad answer questions about the sport.
