Yeah. In sports or fighting, speed does a lot of good. Bulk muscle can actually slow you down. Chicks dig em though, so they're good for that.

most women I know find the huge bodybuilder-esqe muscles as a turnoff. Yeah there are still plenty that like them, just as there are many that dont. Those women I do know have gravitated towards those with the thin wiry build, kinda like some of the smaller boxers/wrestlers.

Nope. I'm a guy! Thanks all the same!

Sorry dude! Out of curiosity, what's your BMI? Have you tried a personal trainer? They can be very helpful.

24%... ouch, I know. Hey, I saw a doctor today for my shoulder, but asked him about my weight. He suggested doing the counting calories thing, and I'm already keeping a log of EVERYTHING I eat. I'm surprised some of things I do forget. Doctor, he said in his experience, most everyone was surprised at how little they actually NEED to eat. Also, he said that you have to exercise for 40 minutes before the body starts breaking down fat. I got in two hours of swimming last night, and I felt damn good- no depressing dreams or anything.
As for a personal trainer, I had one when I was 21, but he was this twenty year old Korean kid who was used to the "I can't stop eating, woah is me" crowd, and didn't really understand my situation. I could try again, but I don't feel I need a trainer.

Some of the best trainers I've found have been at community centers, like the YMCA and the Jewish Community Center here. Often places like that will focus on trainers with a broader knowledge base (i.e. BS in Nutrition and a personal trainer cert. on the side, some of them are even nurses), because they will be working with moms, the elderly, and even kids...and have a different mentality than the typical personal trainer. You know...the 20 year old PTs you find at most gyms.

There's a gym here that's actually affiliated with a hospital, and their trainers work together with physical therapists and physicians and even can help with rehab. So...you might look in that direction if you want to give training another go.

I applaud you for swimming for 2 hours. I would drown. Somehow, my uncoordinated body just never figured out how to swim efficiently, even after 6 years of lessons! I can swim, but it definitely is not my preferred exercise. You must be a healthy, fit person if you are able to do prolonged aerobic activity like that...even if you don't look how you want to.

2 hours of swimming is nothing, ive done full day sessions already. Of course, thats not counting trips to the restroom, meal time. I dont bother with the wait after eating, its never hurt me. You should always 'fuel up' when working out. Too bad Its not summer and I dont have a job yet, else id be at the pool all the time. Well, if i still dont have a job by summer, at least the river is basically in my back yard. Diving off of the railroad trestle into it is a nice adrenaline rush too. That about a 50 foot dive if i remember. Or I could bick 5 miles to the falls. The way the water pools at the bottom is like a lagoon, and is pretty damn deep, but no risk of rocks. theres some nice diving areas there too.

if your curious, look up glen onoko falls, and lehigh river. Thats pretty much my backyard :D, well if you count everything within 5 miles of your house as it.

Who ever said I wanted muscles to please women? I could care less about attracting shallow women. This is about me being strong and looking in the mirror and liking the way I look. The way I see it you can spend your whole life trying to look like how women want you to look, or you can just look how you want to look. BTW if I wanted to look like how girls, because there are no women around here wanted me to look, I'd look like some skinny pansy, but screw that.

hey, wasnt saying thats why you are going that way. As long as it is how you yourself want to be, not how other people want ya to be. Plus I kinda do enjoy looking weak and then having people underestimate me :D

Have you tried cutting out gluten? ( in wheat, rye, and barley, and present in a lot of packet and fast foods ) .

As many as 10-25% of the population are gluten intolerant, and one of the most common "side effects", ( along with depression, skin complaints, various neuropathies ), is obesity/overweight.

The old idea that you would inevitably have gastro-intestinal symptoms if you are gluten-intolerant is just that, old.

Whenever I cut it out, ( and I have been gf for 26 months this time; full positive effects hit at around six months when gluten leaves liver ) , I have lost a lot of weight, very fast. :)

PS. 1% of the pop have classic celiac disease but they tend to be thin, whereas gluten intolerance, which affects far far more people, ( from 10% of the pop ), tends to cause weight gain.

.

While I've never been even close to fat, I agree that when i cut out gluten--or at least some of the more obvious culprits such as grains, that I lose weight as well (I do tend to get a small, but noticeable gut). In fact, at 5' 3" I have maxed out at about 145 and right now am running at about 126 or so. I don't skip meals (with rare exceptions) and I actually eat full meals as well.

As far as losing weight, I've found the Okinawan Diet Plan to be pretty useful. It's based on a 25-year study of the Okinawan people and touts that Okinawans actually eat more food per day (in pounds) than Americans, yet are much thinner--and healthier.

Anyway, my $.02

I've actually been in that area a couple times. My aunt lives in Pennsylvania (Seven Valleys) and her family vacations in the Poconos. I drove through that area on my way to and from Maine, and even stopped to eat lunch at a deli in Lehigh Valley, PA. It's a pretty area.

alot of outdoor activities to do in the poconos in general. Too bad i want to leave though because of the lack of job opportunities. Maybe if I was an artsy person id open a shop in one of the towns, but im not really that artsy.

Maybe you can get a job at one of the state parks, or with an outfitter. Sounds like you're a good enough swimmer to be a whitewater rafting guide! That always seems like such an awesome job (but not for a crappy swimmer like myself). Have you ever worked as a lifeguard?

if you don't have any health issues, losing fat is a simple process
you need to have a calorie deficit, so you either eat less, exercise more or both

I suggest you checkout www.fitday.com to do a log of what you typically eat to get an idea and just try to drop your calorie intake by about 300 and do some more exercise to raise the deficit. A deficit of 500 calories per day will drop 1lb in a week

Also a person who is aerobically fit will use more oxygen and water and burn calories more than an obese person. So it would help to do some kind of fitness exercise like cycling.

Everyone else can just live their lives, but I have to spend my life worrying about my waistline.

Oh well. Go ahead, say it's me, some I'm doing wrong. EVERYONE ELSE DOES.

If you're dieting and exercising and suddenly you quit losing weight... then you've platued. Try upping the intensity, doing something differant, doing things at differant times... mix it up either way. You're body is stuck in a rut and you've got to shove it out of that rut by doing something differant. Basically if your body gets used to what you consider exercise then it's not exercise anymore it's normal activity for your body.

Oh, one more thing- try getting an account on www.fitday.com It's free and it's a great resource. Pretty much you put in your height, weight, lifestyle and what not and it tells you how many calories you burn just being you. Then you can log what you eat (they have a huge library of what the average nutritional value is for alot of foods) and log your exersize. It keeps track of all sorts of weight loss related stuff and even has features where you can see what your calorie intake to burn ratio is. Either way, if you burn more calories off in a day than you eat you will lose weight regardless of whatever voodoo is going on genetically.

Oh and weight loss can be figured out mathmatically. 3500 calories roughly equals 1 pound. So if you burn 3500 caloried more than what you eat you should lose 1 pound.

For instance- right now at my weight, height and activity level I burn 2775 calories every day just by being me (that's not including exercise). Since i'm trying to lose weight I eat less than 1775 calories every day. Therefore by default I burn off 1000 calories every day. So every 3 1/2 days I lose a pound. It's as easy as that- like I said it's all math.
