Is This Suspicious?
That's what I'm talking about- outright lying.
My thing is how do I know they have the right bike for me, unless they're willing to put it in writing/e-mail? For the record, I also e-mailed other local shops, and currently await their responses. The only reason I'm even considering a bike is I need a method of transportation. These bikes cost hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, so if I get ripped off and have no evidence that they ripped me off because they only answered so many of my questions via e-mail, I can't get my money back. If I can't get my money back, it's going to be even longer before I can get a method of transportation. I'm not going to Wal-Mart or Target, because mass produced, one-stop shop bikes are crap.
I didn't think you were going to Wal-Mart or Target, that's why I was referencing the way salespeople behave at cycle shops. Just for information, my bike is a TREK 2200 carbon-composite racing geometry bicycle with Campagnolo components. It's 15 years old, no longer made, and would still bring over a thousand dollars if I chose to sell it. I used to be a very serious cyclist. Sadly, my back no longer allows that. But I was really into bikes for a long time, and have known a lot of cycle salespeople.

I can't convince you otherwise if you want to believe that the most negative possibility will be the reality. I really don't see this happening, especially because these are real cycle salespeople, not someone working for a big-box discount store. But as I mentioned, depending on their return policy, they are not necessarily obligated to take the bike back for any reason, including recorded falsehoods. It's very easy for them to say " The salesperson was misinformed" or "The customer' lack of ability to use the bike properly does not constitute a falsehood on our part." I really think you're worrying about being taken advantage of too much, though.

I know, I just added that in case anyone tries to tell me to just go to a place like that. If my future bike is to be my main method of transportation (I absolutely detest the bus system in my city), I'm going to need it to be relatively reliable.

Good luck! Arm yourself with information and good sense! Let us know what you get, and Happy Cycling!

Having been a foster kid in St. Louis, one of the worst cities in the country, sometimes I can't help it.
I grew up in St. Louis, but I was in the 'burbs (Kirkwood) so my experience might have been a little different than yours. Or are you talking about East St.Louis, Illinois?

St. Louis, Missouri. Actually, I grew up in the suburbs too.

However, I currently live in Springfield, MO.

I don't know how old you are, but when I was there, St.L wasn't bad. You didn't want to be down on the riverfront late at night, but otherwise it was pretty tame. I moved when I was not quite seventeen, though, so things could have changed since then.

I moved to Springfield on August twentieth, two thousand ten, lived in St. Louis my whole life until then. I am twenty.
Let's step into the shoes of the owner of the bike shop. They are not just selling bikes. They are selling their expertise. The bike shop with a knowledgeable person who can outfit you with a great bike because of their knowledge of bikes might have bikes that are selling more expensively than you can buy on e-bay (where you will get ZERO customer support and ZERO knowledge based advice).
The bike shop owner was willing to answer SOME of your questions on-line. After a few back & forths, the bike shop owner wanted you to at least MAKE THE EFFORT to physically come to the shop to engage in any more questions and advice from them. You may not purchase a bike from them - but they at least expect you to make the physical effort to engage with them rather than sitting at your computer asking them for free advice. They are busy people too, with a store to run.
As for using a recording device - yes this is paranoid. If you want proof of promises made by a salesperson, a better option would be to physically go to the bike store, speak to the owner/worker at the shop, try out a few bikes and go home to make your decision. After you have decided which bike you want, THEN e-mail the store with their proposals (i.e. warranties, availability of serving, what the fee for the bike includes) and ask if this is correct and ask them to reply via e-mail. Viola - you have your paper trail and can purchase your bike confidently.
I will stress one of my points again, just to make sure you understand. THE OWNER/WORKER AT THE BIKE SHOP IS NOT JUST SELLING BIKES. THEY ARE SELLING THEIR EXPERTISE. When you ask dozens of questions of them and then go elsewhere for a bike that is listed cheaper (but where you cannot get expert advice) - you are technically stealing from the owner/worker who is providing you with the expertise. This is wrong. If I was running a store and had a knowledge base on a specific item (whether it is fine cheeses/bikes/antiques or aquariums, I would also not engage with you unless I thought you were seriously considering purchasing from me. I would also have stopped answering your questions on line and required you to at least attend my shop to indicate your serious interest in dealing with me and not just gleaning my knowledge to purchase elsewhere.
I hope that this makes the dynamics of this situation more clear to you.
I never said I was buying online- I would rather go to Wal-Mart or Target- where I said in another comment I would not go for bikes- so at least I can see the bike before I buy it.
There are several things wrong with this paragraph. Number one, you clearly do not know me, my schedule, or where I live. So don't assume that I am not willing to make an effort, you moronic twat. Second of all, showing up in person and asking them questions does not force me to buy from them- something most people know. lol Third of all, part of running a store is answering peoples' questions, in case you didn't know. P.S. Part of my schedule involves taking five, yes FIVE classes, one of them being a semester's worth of work in HALF the time- and as for taking the bus or something to the bike shop, the buses here only run once an hour during the days/times I might be able to go to the bike shop in person. On top of that, I have e-mailed I think FOUR bike shops in my area. As any intelligent person can see, taking the bus everywhere on a whim is not always possible for someone in my situation. I can only hope that one day you will be that intelligent.
Someone like you, trying to make sure I understand- that is one of the most ironic statements I've seen on this website.
I'm not sure why you keep saying "selling their expertise" when you keep turning around and saying I can wait until later to decide to buy from them. Then again, I fail to comprehend most moronic twats I meet. Second of all, if I go anywhere else for my bike, it will be to another expensive bike shop- so does that mean I am still "stealing"? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH NO, SOMEONE CALL THE F.B.I., I MIGHT "STEAL" SOMEONE'S EXPERTISE BY SHOPPING AROUND!! ! AAAAAHHHHH!! !!
Lastly, all of your anger and contradictions make you sound like you are in a drug-induced rage. If that is so, please seek help.
Okay, OP, I've read two of your threads. You aren't just paranoid. You're insane. You're EXTREMELY rude to people who are trying to help you and answer your questions, and you're incredibly non-receptive of damn good advice. If anyone here is a "moronic twat," it's you. The fact that you're willing to sit here and argue back and forth forever with members of this forum tells me that you have plenty of time to go into a bike store and look at a friggin' bike... Therefore, you are not making the effort. If you're not making an effort you were perfectly capable of making, then we can only conclude that you're not willing to make said effort.
Stop being so goddamn paranoid, and if you're going to ask people for their advice, don't argue with them when they give it, or have fun living a lonely miserable life. Jesus christ, you remind me of my grandma... Thank god she's long gone.

Okay, I just read some of the past comments you've made on Wrong Planet via your profile, and I have to say...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Apparently you are a fourty-four year old who experiments with drugs. And if your comments aren't about drugs, then they're about putting someone down- according to your profile, I'm not the first one you've bitched at or about. Another thing, if you think extremely rude CanadianRose or 1000Knives, who blatantly admitted that he prioritizes being "stylish" over his own safety, are giving "damn good advice", then those drugs really have gotten to your head. In case you are too high to notice, those are the only people to whom I have been rude. Funny you call me lonely and miserable, I'm not the one doing weed or going out of my way to look for people to cuss out in cyberspace, whereas you are clearly doing both of these things. lmao
