In grad school, I usually sat at the front of the class. In one class, though, there was a student who seemingly never showered. The further we got into the semester, the worse he stunk. It finally got to the point that I had to move to the very back as far away from him as I could get.

When I'm working usually every day, but not at weekends unless I'm socializing (which is rare). I'm quite physically active and I do stink if I don't wash regularly. When not working, nor socializing then maybe 3 days is about the limit, when I notice the smell. I try to use eco/natural shower gels and shampoos, I get 10l tub and refill the bottle to reduce plastic waste. Deodorant is a paste that I rub-on with my fingers, also said to be eco/natural stuff. I hate anti-perspirant, it's stupid because I sweat all over, can't really spray my face!
I have a strong dislike of strong deodorants and perfumes and air fresheners, and stale body odour. I dislike tasting smells.

I once spent a couple of nights at a "hotel" that had the best shower I have ever seen.

The "hotel" was a little boutique hotel that was part of a small shopping center. The hotel consisted of a few rooms at one end of the shopping center.

The room that they gave me was a disabled room. The shower was about 6 feet by 8 feet and had a bench where the shower heads were. It also didn't have a door. If you were in a wheel chair, you could go to the bench, transfer to the bench, push the wheel chair out of the way, take a shower sitting down, dry off, pull your wheel chair back over, and transfer to it.

I really enjoyed taking showers there.

My boss just talked about my hygiene today which does hurt but I guess I did need a wake up call. I normally take a bath once a week. I think what caused my smell was the sweat from working a physical job. Not to mention my deodorant ran out.

I would've bathe more if my n-dad wasn't monopolizing the bath tub. One time he got pissed at me when he wanted to take a bath while I claimed the tub. My brother stood up for me and yelled at him.

Aside from that I struggle with depression and I get very tired after work to take care of myself. I prefer to wash myself during my day offs.

I last ran out of deodorant about six years ago and didn't buy any more.

Instead, I wash with an antibacterial soap to get rid of as many bacteria as possible from under my arms.

Huh, I never have thought of that. I appreciate the suggestion.

I shower these days because I like the heat.

I remember an article in... The Guardian? About five years ago maybe, by a microbiologist who argued quite persuasively that it was a silly thing to do. He talked about the cultural history and how it was an historical accident that it became the norm, and how maybe we'd have more resistance to certain types of diseases if we let the microbiome develop more naturally.

I couldn't find that article but I found this one from an American doctor:

https://www.medboundtimes.com/medbound- ... f-regulate

Quote:
He ... made an important distinction between hygiene and bathing. By having good hygiene, we can prevent the spread of diseases; cleaning our hands after using the bathroom or covering our sneezes are a few examples. Bathing, however, is largely about feeling fresh and socially acceptable rather than directly influencing health.

"It's not about health," Hamblin explained. While some prefer fewer showers, others enjoy long, luxurious ones. Ultimately, he emphasized, bathing frequency should be a personal choice rather than a rigid necessity dictated by societal expectations.

I know how judgemental people can be about this.

I didn't have access to hot water for the latter part of my teens, so I bathed with a bucket of water drawn from outside. But it wasn't always safe (very common problem everywhere) and in winter the water was really, really cold. It wasn't always hugely effective and sometimes I couldn't face it.

I remember in that period going to see a rheumatologist, and him making a really hurtful comment out loud for his tape recorder thingy about my autism and my capacity to practise self-care. I guess I hadn't made a great go of things with the bucket the night before, andI never saw him again but I still remember that.

Anyone who is judgemental about it, who assumes the factors in their life are the factors in everyone's life, is just displaying their own ignorance.

Everyone who is judgemental about bathing has made, unconsciously, their own cost-benefit analysis. Showering does them more good than harm, for whatever reason - usually primarily social acceptance.

If it does more harm than good, why the feck would you do it.

Look after yourself mate.
