Who in their right minds would suggest Houston as an Olympic city? (native Houstonian here)

It's either hot and humid, or it's pouring down rain, and God forbid there be a tropical storm/hurricane.

Dallas and San Antonio could work. :?

^I don't think so but the U.S. last had an Olympics was Salt Lake City for 2002 Winter Olympics and Atlanta for 1996 Summer Olympics so the U.S. is overdo for an Olympiad along with Japan.

Tokyo already hosted and that was in 1964.

If the IOC does an Asia-Europe pattern,
someone might cry foul and claim
the IOC is playing the favortism card.

^So the IOC doesn't decide. The people of the world decide where the 31st Olympiad will be and Tokyo has the lead in those votes. Chicago can do it but Tokyo and Chicago have very good economies that it will be down to the wire by votes of the people of the world.

South America and Africa probably can't afford to host the Olympics!

^Well South Africa will host the next FIFA World Cup.

Anyway I found the site dealing with 2016 bids

http://www.gamesbids.com/english/bids/2016.shtml

Tokyo and the other cities have a bigger population over Chicago though the U.S. has a larger population overall over Japan.

Its down to who can afford it in the end which leaves Tokyo and Chicago

Chicago was to be the original site of 1904 games but give it St. Louis due the World Fair.

I would choose Tokyo. They had a very successful Games in 1964. There were a lot of great athletes that year.

Vancouver has the Winter Games in 2010. They also had the 1954 Empire Games, where Roger Bannister won the mile race and John Landy came in second.

Vancouver should be a good Winter Olympics

Chicago may get it because it could redeem itself from the mistake back in 1904 (about 104 years now but by then 112 years)

Tokyo wouldn't have a problem with either because 1998 was the last they hosted an Olympiad in their nation.

It would be nice if Chicago got the 2016 Olympics, but I don't think that will happen. The best bet, in my opinion, is Rio de Janeiro. No South American city has ever hosted the Olympics (Mexico City is in NORTH America, isn't it?), but there's a first time for everything. The '16 Games could be destined for Brazil.

Here's how:

Funding for the Rio de Janiero 2016 bid:
When revealing details for the 2016 bid, Mayor Cesar Maia described the bid as "more modest" than the 2012 bid. "Our bid four years ago was competitive but it was based on possibilities.” With experience and resources from the Pan Am Games, this time the bid is more concrete. Currently, 56% of the planned sports facilities already exist. The venues budget is set at $508 million. Public and private funding of USD $42 million will cover the applicant and candidate stages of the bid. This is inline with other city's budgets. The federal government has guaranteed to cover any cost over runs and all levels of government support the capital infrastructure upgrades required. Revenue of US$750 million is expected.

^Well Chicago and Tokyo can easily reach the money needed to hosted the 2016 Olympics through their economies and other methods of funding as well.

Here are links to other cities that lost out because:
The city could not elect a commitee
The city lost funding
The city could not find funding
The city was eliminated in preliminary voting by the IOC
Political/Security Tensions
All of the above
