The Sport/motorsport of remote control auto racing
Mazda Cup, Irvine,CA, September 18 2010.
The day before the race, the track was setup in the Mazda North American Headquarters parking lot and my dad and I got to practice a bit on the track, to get the two cars that I would be running that weekend, setup well. By the time it got dark it was time to pack up because the cars were becoming hard to see and I did no want the cars to be damaged by crashing into something.
The morning of the race, my dad had left the tent at the track last night so we could easily setup our pit area with our table and chairs. I did a few practice laps out on the track with both cars just to get feel again since the track layout was changed this morning, then pulled off and got ready for the drivers meeting.
After the rules were explained at the meeting, and a group photo was taken, I got ready for my first race of the day which was RCGT non-boosted.
RCGT non-boosted, Round One.
In this race, I start first one the grid. One of the racers in the class actually has turbo in his car which is again the rules and is cheating. I start up in front of the pack and as the race beings I notice the racer who has turbo in his car has a huge advantage on the backstretch, I am constantly battling it out with the two racers behind me, one time on the straight the car with turbo blows by me and takes first from me, I also get into a tangle with third which drops me back a position, at the last few laps of the race 1st and 2nd get into a tangle and I get by to win the first round of qualifying for the RCGT non-boosted class.
Front Wheel Drive, Round One.
In this round, I start mid pack and then try to work my way up to the lead but on the second lap I slightly touch the barriers coming onto the straightaway and slowly roll my car over where I have to be marshaled (a situation where the are multiple people around and on the track where if your car gets stuck or flips over, the marshal will run to your car and pick it up and put it back onto the track again) but I end up making a comeback and pass every other car and go on to set the Top Qualifying position for round one.
RCGT non-boosted, Round Two
This race, the racer who has turbo in his car has been moved up to a faster class, now there are only 3 cars that in this race, I am at the back of the pack this time. As the race starts out, I get by second place and then I chase after 1st. For the entire duration of the race, the gap between me and second are separated by 3 seconds and it’s a constant tug of war between me and the leader. With a minute to go I am able to catch up the leader and now the gap is 7 tenths of a second, on the last lap I am right on his bumper but time runs out and first is able to beat me and take TQ honors as I am now qualified 2nd in the A main.
Front Wheel Drive, Round Two.
This time I am at the back of back as the grid is reversed but still as the race begins I am able to get past every car cleanly and go on to take the 2nd qualifier and earn the Top Qualifying position.
After the round I was interviewed by a RC car website called NitroRCX, they asked me about drifting which I knew nothing about, but knew enough to where I could tell them information about the cars, my interview didn’t make the video but there were some clips of me in he video with me on the drivers stand and my car.
RCGT A main
I am starting second on the grid, there are supposed to be three cars in this A main but the third racer decided to sit out the A main. So now it’s a two car race between me and the Top Qualifier, Kevin Cole. We shake hands at the before the race begins, and wait for the sound of the tone.
As the race begins, on the first lap, Kevin Cole hits a corner and rolls over I go on to take the lead. For most of the race I have comfortable lead on my competitor however with 3 minutes to go I make a rare mistake and hit one of the plow disks coming into the chicane and Kevin goes by, I chase after him and try to reel him in I inch close and closer every lap. Then on the second to last lap, I make a gutsy move on Kevin Cole and pass him on the inside, Kevin hits me in the rear as I pass him but no damage is done and then try to stretch my advantage out. About several seconds after I passed him he clips a corner and rolls his car over, time expires and I go on to take the win in RCGT non-timing.
Front Wheel Drive A main.
This race was pretty straightforward, I started on the pole, and as the race begins, I got off to great start and never looked back. 2nd place did try to reel me in for a few laps but I ended up taking the win by being flawless and not making any mistakes.
After the races ended we had a trophy presentation and got my picture taken with the trophy girls, and then I headed home to watch a movie with my parents.
Thank you for reading the Mazda Cup race report, Here is a picture of me being interviewed on nitrorcx.com.

Next up will be the Whole F’n Race report, stay tuned for the report.
The Whole F’n race, September 25 2010 Cal Raceway, Orange,CA.
My dad and I got to the track around 5 O’clock to setup our pit area and then practice on the track for an hour before the race began. The cars that racers, including me are running are all front wheel drive, Tamiya (a Japanese company that produces remote control cars) just released a front wheel drive sedan in July, and a lot of racers have been buying them as well as racing them. There are two qualifiers that are a heads up on the tone start, and are 6 minutes long, after that, the race goes to Triple A mains (top 8 racers), and are also a heads up on the tone start and are still 6 minutes long. In a triple A main if you win you get 100 points, 2nd 99, third 98, and so on. The racer who has the most amount of points at the end of three A main races wins, however if a racer who wins the first two A mains is automatically the winner and gets to sit out the third A main, if he wishes.
Qualifier 1
I start in the middle of the pack, as the race begins, I move my way through traffic, all the way to the front, after that, I never looked back, and I end up winning the first qualifier by more than a lap.
Qualifier 2
In this qualifier I have a little bit more stiff competition, one of the racers in this race, Rod Canare, beat me, and won, the Tamiya North American Finals in the Front Wheel Drive class this August. In this qualifier, I am still sitting mid pack, as the tone sounds, for two and a half laps I am sandwiched between, Rod Canare, who is in front of me, and Orlando Sherman, another racer, who is behind me. I am trying my best not to get caught up in a wreck between the two drivers. A lap later I get on the inside of Rod Canare and then pass the next two racers and for the remainder of the race I take the lead and go on to win the race by almost a lap. Taking TQ (top qualifier) honors.
A Main 1
I am starting on the front row position, the race starts out with me getting ahead of my competitor Rod Canare, he is able to hang with me for the first few laps but then I begin to pull away after that, I break away from the pack more and more every lap, at the end of the race I end up winning by almost a lap as I did in the second qualifier.
A main 2
In this race Rod Canare is right on my bumper at the start of the race but then he rolls it over and I get off to a great lead, I really begin to stretch out my lead. With 2 minutes to go, I get a little greedy and I feel I want to put a lap on Rod Canare, I start to drive more and more aggressive, I roll over once coming into a corner but come shiny side up again, then on the last lap, I try to make a risky pass on Rod, and we get caught up, by getting stuck for a few moments but then I get untangled and drive on by and win the 2nd A main by a lap, taking the overall win.
I was a little disappointed in myself for doing an aggressive pass on my opponent Rod Canare, as well was my dad, I am not the person who would do something like that. Since I had won the first two A mains I did not need to run the third however there were racers trying to encourage to run and have fun the final A main, at first I did not want to run the third but after some convincing I decide to give it a whirl, one thing to mention was that my dad and I had just packed up our stuff and there were two batteries on the table and we didn’t know which one was charged, we chose one and we later found out that it was the pack that we ran in the previous race before and was not fully charged.
A main 3
My competitor Rod Canare and I decided to start at the back of the pack this time with me being in last place, due to the fact that we wanted to give the racers in the lower position a chance to win. The race starts out with me and Rod at the back, but two laps later I get past Rod Canare and the other racers and go after the leaders. With two minutes into the race I get past 2nd place and chase after first, first place is much slower than me however he is driving a tight line and not letting me by, however 3 laps later I am able to squeeze by him, and take the lead and never look back, I end up winning the race by half a lap, with a half charged battery pack.
After the race the awards ceremony began and I received my trophy then got my picture taken with all the racers. I felt bad about the incident where I made a risky pass on Rod to lap him however I felt I a little better when I came back to win the final A main and was able to control myself.
Thank you for reading my race report of The Whole F’n Race, the KO Propo Grand Prix report will follow.
I am now 72% done with the report, I plan on finishing it this week or weekend.

KO Propo Grand Prix October 2-3 2010
My dad and I practiced for this race for two weeks, on the last two practice days we were having problems with traction rolling and were struggling with setup on the car. “Traction rolling” is where your car’s tires bite into the track too much, coming into a corner, which causes the front or rear wheels to lift, to a point where the car will want to roll over, by itself without hitting anything. The most serious part on the track where it was traction rolling was the “sweeper”, a long flowing corner that is round and carries fastest speed while taking a turn. On the last day of practice we found out one of my tires was unglued off the rim. This causes the tire to be very unstable and flex way too much while cornering which causes the car to roll over. My dad glued up the tire again and the problem was solved, a professional remote control car racer that I raced with since I was 11-12, helped me work on my car and did some adjustments that also helped the performance of the car as well. After the last day of practice was over I went to bed feeling content that my car would handle well and I would perform well too.
The first day of qualifying, during practice, I took the car out for several laps to scrub in a new set of tires for the first 3 qualifiers for the day. After that happened, I charged up a few batteries to get ready for the first qualifier.
Qualifying is done by points, your two best qualifiers are added up, if you come in first in one round of qualifying, you get 0 points, if you come second you get 2, third 3, and so on. The driver with the least amount of points at the end of four rounds get the top qualifying position and starts on the front row.
Qualifier 1
There wasn’t much that happened here, I started from the back and worked my way up to second and stayed there for the entire race, I did get off to a unsteady start at the beginning because one racer and I sped off the line at the same time even though he should of gone after I went. I end up winning my qualifier and taking 2nd overall in qualifying.
Qualifier 2
This race went a little smoother. I get off to a better start at the beginning and I’m able to fight my way through traffic and take 1st place in my heat, the top qualifier in the heat after me broke while taking a practice lap which allowed me to take top qualifying honors in round two
Qualifier 3
This race did not go out as a I planned it to be, I start at the front of the pack, and get off to a good start, however a minute in the race my car shuts down which gives me a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the race. My third qualifier however is dropped and my previous two qualifiers are added up and I am still sitting second overall.
Qualifier 4
This race was much better than the third qualifier, I had my speed control (A device that powers you motor) replaced due to the fact that it was the main reason why my car shut down in the last qualifier. From start to finish, me and the top qualifier Ron Schurr who is one of my sponsors and gives me deal on motors and batteries, are neck and neck throughout the entire qualifier, it is a constant tug of war between him and me for the entire 6 minutes of qualifying however I am not able to get in front of him though, at the end of the qualifier, I finish second overall and earn 2nd on the grid for the A main finals.
In Triple A Mains you get points for finishing in a certain position, if you win you get 100 points, if you come in second, you get 99, third, 98, etc. The racer at the end of 3 A mains with the most amount of points is the winner, however if a racer wins the first two A mains he automatically wins and gets to sit out the third A main.
A main 1
I am sitting second on the grid behind Ron Schurr, as the race begins; Ron and I start to break away from the pack and then being to dice it out, like in the 4th qualifier we are jockeying for position for the entire race. For a few laps, Ron pulls away from me while every other few laps I reel him in again, this happens throughout the entire race, however I am not able to pass or make a move on Ron and as the race end he takes A main # 1 by less than a second with me behind him.
A main 2
In this second A main, this race is just as interesting and just as exciting, the race start out with me right on Ron’s tail for the first few laps, on the 4th lap I get on the inside of him and pass him coming into the sweeper, and I am able to maintain a lead on him until 3 laps later, I go little wide coming into the infield and Ron is able to get under me. A lap later I am right behind him and I lightly brush the rear side of his car and his body shell gets tucked under one of his rear wheels, and I go by, I go on to lead the rest of the race and take A main #2 and now the overall race is to be decided in the 3rd A main.
I later apologized to Ron for tuck his body shell under his tire and he said it was ok; we then got ready for the third and final A main, which would be quite a memorable race.
A main 3
Fasten your seatbelts; this is going to be a pretty wild ride. Since Ron has a victory in A main 1 and I have a victory in A main 2, anything can happen and if ether one of us win this 3rd and final A main, one of us goes on to take the overall victory. The tone sounds and everyone bunches up into the infield. Halfway through the first lap, I get taken out by third place and get shuffled back all the way to last place and now I have to fight my way back up the field. I pick off each racer one by one and move my way to the front. I manage to get up to third. As I catch up to second place, I try to make a pass on him but then I bump him from the rear end and take him out, which is very unusual for me and I usually never take anybody out, the driver is very angry at me and shouted at me on the drivers stand the moment I took him out, after that I focus on the leader. About two laps later I catch up to Ron Schurr and hunt him down. I try to make a pass on him and he is doing a very good job of keeping the door shut on me. Every lap, I try to get on the inside of him and try to pass him, then with less than 3 minutes to go, I get on the inside of him coming onto the backstretch we collide and he hits the wall then hits me but I am able to get through the mess. However my body shell becomes tucked under one of the rear wheels of my car, and now there are marshals chasing after my car in each corner ( a person that help flip car over if you get stuck) wanting to untuck my car, however I try to keep racing on even thought my car is not handling right. I then traction roll in the middle of the sweeper and then I have to get my body untucked and let few other racers by, then get into a collision but I’m able to keep going. With 30 seconds left into the race I go after 2nd and first, I am able to get by 2nd, then on the last lap I make a risky pass on first place, on the backstretch and I zoom by and I go on to win the final A main and take the overall 17.5 non timing class championship, a the KO Propo Grand Prix.
One of the racers that I took out was quite angry at me and before I went up to him to apologize, I let him cool off until my dad came up to me and told me to apologize to his face. After that I thanked all the people who helped me over the race weekend, and then participated in the awards ceremony and received my trophy and got my picture taken.
Thank you for reading my race report of the 2010 KO Propo Grand Prix, I will now work on the Tamiya America Fun Race.
