The Sport/motorsport of remote control auto racing
Tamiya America Fun Race, Tamiya America Raceway, October 9 2010.
I had been racing every weekend for a month, but I still was enthusiastic about racing. My dad and I got to the track around 7:00AM American Pacific Time and setup our pit table for the race, and for practice. We took the car out onto the track for practice for a few runs, then the race director announced that today they would be running the track backwards, or clockwise. This has not been done since the very first Tamiya North American Finals in 1995, when it was called the Tamiya Nationals. It was a little bit of a learning curve, but I was able to earn the track well and not make any mistakes. I am running the Front Wheel Drive class racing against two former national champions, Rod Canare, the 2003 GT1 champion, and Bruce Hickman the 1998 F1 Champion.
Qualifier 1
I am starting mid pack on the grid, The race starts out with everyone bunching up into the first corner, I end up getting taken out by Bruce Hickman coming on the first turn and now I have to move my up the field from near the back of the pack. As I try to pick off each racer, one by one, I try to make a move on a racer named, Orlando Sherman. As I make a move on him in the same corner, he spins me around, twice. As two minutes pass my battery starts to get weak and runs out of juice. My dad and I charged the pack all the way but it seemed like it was not charged enough to last the entire race, I end up with a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the first round of qualifying and I will be starting at the back of the back in the second qualifier.
Qualifier 2
This time, my dad and I charged up a battery pack that would do a much better job of lasting the entire race, however I am starting at the back of the pack and I will have to find a way through the field. As the race starts out, I find a way to move through the racers in front of me, I pick off quite a few racers in front of me one by one, I do get into a few banging matches once in awhile, but I end up getting through clean. At the end the qualifier I take 4th out of 11 racers and get ready for the A main final.
A main final
There is a prize that is up for grabs for the racers who finish in the top three. First place gets a 50% discount card on anything they buy at Tamiyausa.com, 2nd place get 45% off, and third place gets 30%. I am sitting in the 4th place position and I have a chance to take third. The race begins, for the first minute 3rd place is holding his ground against me and Is doing a good job not letting me by, however on the next lap, a lapped car bangs doors with another car, and ricochets off the infield and on the backstretch and hits third place head on just a inch in front of me and third place breaks down and is out of the race, I now take the third place position. For the rest of the race I try to hunt down 2nd place which is Bruce Hickman, but his car is way too fast for mine, and his motor is running much better than mine, also first place Rod Canare puts a lap on me. As time expires, I go on to take 3rd place and get a 30% discount card off of tamiyausa.com. Even though I felt I could have done better, I still drove a flawless race where I made no mistakes.

Ultimate F1 Series Round Two race report, November 20 2010.
The night before the race, me and my dad got the car setup well at the track that we would be racing at, to prepare ourselves for the race, the next day we arrived at the track around 10:00AM. My dad and I got our equipment setup for the race and went out onto the track for a few practice runs, and then we got ready for Qualifying.
I would like to take this time to explain the rules of qualifying In the Ultimate F1 Series. Qualifiers are two minutes in length, and here a staggered start. How the grid is determined is by your fastest overall lap. The racers with the top 8 single fastest laps will advance to the A Main, the rest will duel it out in the B main.
Qualifying.
As the race starts out, my car is very edgy and twitchy, it turns in great but is a handful to drive, I slap a few boards but my car is still in tact. With 45 seconds into the qualifier, My motor starts to “cog” under power every few moments. When your motor cogs, it means that your car will shut down and start up again for a fraction of a second, this was happening throughout the race, causing myself to one time drive my car over a board but able to land on all four tires. With 30 seconds left in the race, the gears in my car become unmeshed and my come s to a stop and I am not able to finish the qualifier however I am able to set the 7th fastest lap time which qualifies me for the A main.
Now I will take the time to explain how the racing format works. There are three mains, each main from the B main to the A main. Each main is 8 Minutes long, in each of these mains, you must make two pit stops, how this works is, whenever you have the time, you must drive into a designated area of the track, that resembles a pit road, twice. For each time you enter the pit area, someone puts a sticker on your front wing. At the end of each main the race official check to see if you have two stickers on the front wing of your car. If you do not, your run is disqualified. You can not pit on the first lap or the last lap.
Another thing to mention is that each round awards point, let say there are 16 racers all together First place gets 16 points, second place get 15 points, third 14 and if your last overall 1 point. If you break or do not finish in the A main you get bumped down to the B main and if you have a time in the B main that is fast enough to be in the A main you get bumped up to the A.
A main 1
I am sitting 7th on the grid and want to make sure that I get my pit stops right. Once the race starts, everyone bunches up into the first corner and I wait patiently for pother racers to make mistakes and head in for their pit stops. One by one, the racers head in and at the 3 minute mark I am able to take the lead. At the four minute mark, I head in for my first pit stop and my first sticker on my front wing, and then I speed off. I try to maintain my lead on second place but he is gaining on me. With one minute left to go into the race, I have to make a pit stop and I drop to second and I end up finishing second in the first round with a total of 14 points.
A main 2
In this race I start second on the grid, I do to the same pit strategy as I did in the first. During my first pit stop I am able to maintain my lead. However at the second pit stop, I lose I my lead again since that second made quite some distance on me. I finish as I did in the first in second with 14 points for the main and a total of 28 points altogether.
A main 3
I still am sitting second on the grid and have good hopes of winning this race.
When the tone sounds I drive my race and try to put some ground on my competition, as first place pits I try to pull ahead as much as possible, however as I pit at the 4 minute mark, I do not have as much real estate to stay ahead, and second place passes me as I exit the pit area, I do however, have a chance to win, since I have some good points racked up. After my second pit stop I still am in second place, there is a lapped car behind me who is much faster than I am, and is not giving me much space, I am quite worried that he could be a hazard to me, as time expires, I get taken out by the lapped car behind me, and land upside down, four feet from the finish line, finishing 3rd after I get flipped over on my wheels again. I end up with 13 points with an overall total of 41.
First through third end up with a total of 41 points however I end up second dues to the fact first place has a faster overall time in one of the mains, I was disappointed that I could of won, but I felt happy I got second, In the overall points championship, I am one point behind first, and still have a chance to win the championship.
Thank you for reading my race report. Tomorrow is round three of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series. I will do a race report on that race as well.
I have just finished round three of the UF1 race report, here it is.
Ultimate F1 Winter Series, Round 3. December 4 2010
A week ago, my dad and I tested a new car at the track and got it setup for the 3rd round of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series. We got to the track around 10:00AM, and did a few practice runs then got ready for qualifying.
Qualifying
My car for this round of qualifying is handling much better and is rotating around the corners a lot more freely. At the 1 minute mark I have the fastest lap, with an 11.305 however two laps later, a racer named Alex Navarrete, takes the top spot with an 11.293. Time expires and I end up qualifying 2nd in the A main.
In the Ultimate F1 Series, if you qualify in the top three, you are automatically in the A main for each round. This makes me happy and I am getting ready for the first A main.
There are 11 total cars today, so there is a 6 car A main, and making it is pretty slim for most racers, however I am feeling pretty good that my car will have a good chance of winning today.
A main 1
The race starts out with me behind Alex Navarrete and trying to watch him make a mistake, he stands his ground however he heads in for his first pit stop and I take the lead, As I try to build my lead up I have to get through slower traffic sometimes. As I come up to two slower cars, I make an impatient pass on them, and get taken out, and have to be marshaled which makes me lose a lot of time on my competition. I head in for my first pit stop and lose two positions, with six minutes to go, second place crashes in front of me and I crash into him which causes the gears on my car to get bound up. I want to pull the car in, but he race announcer says that if I do not go in for my second pit stop I will be disqualified. My dad found a way to get my gears unbound and I then go in for my second pit stop and finish the race 5th with a total of 7 points for the round.
A main 2
I get knocked back all the way to 5th overall, but I still feel that I could win, my dad told me to pit earlier which would help me stay ahead of racers better. The race begins and every lap I wait patiently for every driver to come in for their pit stop. At the 1:30 mark, I go in for my pit stop, and off I sped. First place goes in for his pit stop, and I reclaim the lead. At the 3 minute mark, my dad tells me to go in for my second pit stop and I still have the lead and I don’t have to pit for the rest of the race. I maintain my distance on second place all the way to the last lap and go on to win A main #2 with 11 points and an overall total of 18 points.
A main 3
I start at the front of the grid this time, and before the race, my dad and I discussed that I would use the same pit strategy as in the last A main. As the tone sounds, and I get several laps in, everyone goes in for their pit stops and at the 1:30 mark I go in for mine. I still maintain my lead, however my car is quite loose off acceleration turning left, My dad commands me, next to the driver stand, go in for my second pit stop, and I go in and still maintain my lead as I come out. My car is handling a little better turning left as the race progresses and I am still driving a clean race and I still have the lead. I go on to win the final A main with 11 points and a total of 29 points.
My dad and I found out that my right rear wheel was loose and the wheel nut was not tightened properly, which could have fallen off and was a explanation for why my car was not handling properly.
As the final points of the race are tallied I end up 2nd overall for round three of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series, however I am now leading the championship by two points. It could come down to the wire this season.
Thank you for reading my race report of The Third round of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series. Tomorrow, I will compete in the 12th Annual Toys for Tots charity RC race in Huntington Beach, CA. I will write a report for that as well.
Hello guys.
I have decided not to write a race report about the toys for tots charity race. I decided not to race, because me and my dad wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather yesterday. However I will write a race report of Round 4 of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series. The race will be Dec 18 and the report will follow after that.
