Are alcoholism/ drug addiction really diseases?

Actually, the more I think about it the more the entire premise of this thread is a bit insulting.

Person A suffers from a physical / chemical addiction and cannot overcome it through willpower alone.

Person B has not personally gone through a situation lacks the mental capacity to imagine what it might be like, to display empathy for the person who is going through that situation, and thus seeks to dismiss out of hand what the person is going through and to delegitimize it, probably because if the other person' situation were legitimate, it would jeapordize their own sense of superiority over them.

Sorry but its pretty clear which of the two is the true 'mental m***et'.
