The one I practice is Taekwondo.

There are nine colored belts, and nine black belts in Taekwondo.
The colored belts go in order:
Beginner:
White
Orange
Yellow
Then Intermediate:
Camoflage
Green (Don't quote me on anything after this yet)
Blue
Close to Black belt is:
Purple
Brown
Red
Finally comes the first black belt. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Interesting. In my dojo (independent but aikikai-ish aikido), the adult belts are two whites (first is 6th kyu), two blues, two browns, and up to 10 levels of black. Kids have a bunch of belts before they get to 6th kyu, too.

Yeah, from when I did it it was two of each for kids; White, Yellow, Blue, Red, Brown, Black. Then there are just levels of Black. For Aikido there was just White, Brown, and Black.

I guess the concept of belt color was that in the olden days everyone started with one white belt. A martial artist never washed one's belt, and the more one trained the more soiled it became. Eventually, after many years of constant training, the belt would become black.

It all has to do with the number nine. Nine letters in Taekwondo (your counting right now, aren't you?), nine colored belts, nine black belts, and nine points on the Taekwondo star.

Just learned that I'm probably going to get my Camoflage belt! Joy and rapture!

So if you participate in a martial art, what belt are you at?

I'm not familiar with shodan. Could you please elaborate?

Japanese terms:
dan = blackbelt.
shodan = first level black belt.
nidan = 2nd level black belt
sandan = 3rd level black belt
etc.

Its been about 4 years in now and I'm testing for red belt Sunday (11/11).

The breakdown of what we do: mostly Kuntao and Panantukan (Filipino striking) for empty hands, Wing Chun for bridging and some blocking as well as neck/body manipulation (forms and wooden dummy included), Chin Na for locks, and Kali/Arnis as well as some Wing Chun for weaponry.

Very fun class so far and in red we'll be focusing more on our jiu jitsu (mostly for handling what comes at us albeit we're more ground and pound by nature).

Black belt in Kenpo, took a lot of classes in boxing/kickboxing, JJ, wrestling, and MMA but due to money issues I can't keep going for awhile. Classes are very expensive.

Tai Chi is the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm going to my morning outdoor training in just a few minutes - 3 degrees out there (37.4 F) so it's gonna be chilly.

If I can find the time and a good English-speaking teacher I may start with Kung Fu as well. It is based in the same roots and principles as Tai Chi.

I always wanted to do some sort of martial art as a child but my mother never allowed it. I really resent that now, seeing how much it helps me with so many aspects of my life.
