so, eating? Anyone else a Vegan? not judging other diets
According to actual scientific knowledge, vitmain B12 supply is necessary, when having a strict vegan diet. Humans cant produce vitamin B12 on their own, and the vegan supply of vitamin B12 can mostly only be found in ways, that dong to to our actual lifestyle. So the organsim producing B12 are very simple ones, typical veggies as carrots, tomatoes, wheat, ... dont produce them. Typical pure vegetarian animals, take vitamin B12 supplies into them, when digesting grass and leafes (another reason why the industrial producement of flesh is bad, because pure corn-feed animals lack as well vitamin B12 and so their flesh also delivers lower supplies of it).
There have been classic religious groups, eating vegan since centuries, that dont show any issues of too low vitamin B12, but the reason is, that due to their hygienic standard, they have supplies, that dont agree with our modern world. So as example if you take a carrot from your own garden, wash it short and eat and cook it rather instantly, there are still lots of small soil organisms on the carrot, that deliver B12. But if you buy food in markets (anyway if organic or not), its normally washed propperly by machines and as well not fresh from earth, but at least 2 days old. So there are no soil organsims left on that, that you could use as B12 supply. (Additionally, you shimply SHOULD care to wash your bought veggies propperly, because of them being in contact with far more people and other infection risks, in opposition to veggies you harvested yourself and used yourself in your own kitchen.)
If you are no 100% pure vegan veggie, it is rather not necessary to have vitamin B12 supply, if you eat healthy. The body is able to store B12 for a very long time and very efficient, so if you are maybe used to eat some sandwich with an milk-based branch every now and then, or maybe eat fish once a week or products with egg in them, that can already be sufficient.
So as long as you eath healthy, vitaming B12 supply is normally only needed if you really eat 100% totally strict vegan.
And as normal vegetarian, its anyway no prob at all, because of you having tons of possible supply in form of milk products and eggs.
Maybe you're anemic? I had a friend in high school who craved ice all the time and she was anemic.

So you're saying that B12 is in the soil organisms which herbivore animals digest along with plants? Interesting.
I eat eggs and occasionally some fish so I should be ok.
I was just wondering if anyone who's a vegan had any problems from not taking vitamin B12 or it's one of those thing that's told as a fact but it's not really true. (e.g. "cow’s milk is a good and necessary source of calcium")
I'm actually interested in the low fat raw vegan diet. But it's expensive and with my work schedule it's impossible to maintain.
At least thats how actual research explains it. I have my knowledge of german vegetarian/veggie/health/medicine sites, but english wikipedia agrees as well on it. "...Only bacteria and archaea have the enzymes required for its synthesis, although many foods are a natural source of B12 because of bacterial symbiosis..." "... Biosynthesis of the basic structure of the vitamin is accomplished only by bacteria (which usually produce hydroxocobalamin), but conversion between different forms of the vitamin can be accomplished in the human body..."
The stuff about the differency of ancient vegan tribes having no probs with B12 and modern veggies is not totally researched. So while certain number of 100% vegans, show signs of typical B12 lack, probes of an certain muslim religious group, living vegan, had no higher amount of people with signs of B12 lack.
So it is researched, that there IS a difference, but not the exact reason. Most scientists think, its because of them having very direct contact to their food, so fruits directly from their own garden ... It could be as well, that because of them being a rather small population that has that vegan lifestyle now for very long generations, that there simply might have happened natural selection. So everyone with a rather bad B12-utility has meanwhile simply "removed" his DNA from their DNApool. ^^
About the true or not, so cow-milk IS a source of calcium, but if it was a necessary source, then lots of cow-milksugar allergic people and populations, would not exist. ^^
I'm not a vegetarian but I eat loads of vegetables and fruits everyday but also take all kinds of vitamins because I'm paranoid I'm not getting enough.
So I was just wondering what your take on the claim that vegans have to take vitamin B12 supplements. Do you think you need it?
just me personally - I don't take any supplements, my doctor recently ran a major checkup on me and said I was one of about 3 of the healthiest patients he has ever had. B12 problems show up mainly as anemia and lack of energy, he has run such a battery of tests it took 16 vials of blood to do.

Maybe you're anemic? I had a friend in high school who craved ice all the time and she was anemic.
I don't know if anemia is the proximate cause, or low iron is; in any case, the craving vanishes in the space of a day once I take a multivitamin.
Before I figured that out, I would crave ice so badly that I would be salivating on my way to work in anticipation of getting to the ice machine. I'd eat ice until my mouth was numb and I couldn't talk.
The odd think is, I have a pretty good diet, even for a vegetarian; I eat a lot of salads and good fruits and veggies.
Vitamins = good.
wrt. dirt: once I had a garden on a sunny hillside with rich, fertile dirt; I planted a salad garden, and for lunch I could go out and pick lettuce, green onions, celery, carrots, etc. right off of the plants and eat them warm from the sun and gritty with dirt. The flavor was so amazing compared to store-bought veggies, it was almost incomparable. No salad dressing necessary.
