I want an all around bike but mostly something I can ride the offroad single track with. I've been looking into 29ers. My budget is under 500. I'm 6'1 and about 150 lbs. I was looking at the Nashbar single speed 29er. Can anyone give me there opinion on that bike? Should I go for the 19" frame? I've never owned a single speed. From what I read it is geared in between riding on road and off. If I was to change out the rear chain ring sprocket for on road riding, is it simple to do? Could I upgrade the fork later to one with a shock? Sorry for all the question, I'm a noob. Thx :D

I appreciate this is a old thread has any one ran a sram chain on a Shimano (ultegra) drivetrain ?

It's the 1070 I think around the Ultegra price point A|$60/65.

Good god it's good so quick and silent and oh so buttery smooth 8O , it's not often I'm impressed especially surprising when "forums" are saying it's the opposite. proof that you can''t believe everything you read.

Though I do worry about reliability it is an American company after all * which has their chains made in Portugal of all places what the hell does Portugal produce apart from olives and massive deficits?

*nearly everything I buy "Made in Usa" turns out to be rubbish my Speedplays with less than 3000km are playing up (3 spots) I think engineers say if it looks well made it probably is (I think they say that :? ) well straight out of the box it looked "wrong" starting with those puny little screws , yes they did fall out and no you wont have the right sized ones at home off to the bike shop why should I use Loctite?

Fsa also want me to use it on their cranks to,

Do I Loctite a Boeing 777?

Still it can't be any worse than Shimano ,(approx) 2500 km and it's at .75 and feeling slack and slappy. I find it hard to believe when Campy riders say they get twice that amount from a chain :?

They lie ?

off-road bikes will need a long travel suspension front and rear, grippy pedals, fat knobby tires, low gearing, preferably an internal hub shimano or similar, as derailleurs are subject to getting crud stuck in their gearing, and a front disc brake so water won't compromise your ability to regulate your speed downhill. and if you can get that green slime anti-flat stuff in addition to a tuffy liner in your tires, that is all the better, as having to fix a flat out in the middle of nowhere would not be fun.

i want a belt drive bike with hub gears. well that is if current hub gears are up to the task. would make an excellent commuting bike.

I've been using my mountain bike for commuting because the BB shell on my steel frame racer is a bit borked. threads are wrecked (by the shop that sold it to me!) and i'm having trouble getting a threadless bb to hold. Need a new BB on my mountainbike too :( i will get an external bearing one which hopefully will be more rigid.

I have a dawes galaxy tourer waiting to be built up. really looking forward to that
