the netherlands used to go under the name holland so i call them that sometimes:/

and i think 'soccer' comes from america because they already have a popular sport called football

I could be wrong but somebody told me that North and South Holland are two regions/areas (or something like that) in the Netherlands.

These two "regions" consist of the majority of the Netherlands, and there are other smaller ones also.

As a result the official/proper name is the Netherlands, though many people, including myself, call it Holland, which is more of an unofficial/nick name.

Could somebody confirm/correct that, as I might be wrong.

In short yes I believe that is correct.

Though the official English name of the sport is Association Football.

Back in the olden days it was shortened (at least by some) to give the name Socca > Soccer, so i believe the english originally used the word.

But then somehow we reverted back to using the word football, while in the states they used the word soccer to differentiate it with that other sport.

At least thats what many people believe happened, though Im sure the terms soccer and football could very well have been used interchangably during those days (in the same way "footie" is also used now).

What did you guys think of the Elia challenge anyway just before the goal. Even though ive seen them given i dont think it was a freekick as he didn't seem to have control over the ball.

and what did you guys think of Webb's and his assistants performances overall, there seems to be a real mix from the people i've spoken too.

Spain are worthy winners, but Catalonia can claim this World Cup trophy as five of the starting 11 plus 1 of the substitutes were Catalans.

What is it with the Dutch and crapping out in finals? 8O

The Netherlands should be charged with brining the game into disrepute, the final was akin to a professional team playing a gifted amateur one who had decided their game plan should be to play the man and not the ball. I love this game and feel that to play the way the Netherlands did in a match that is watched by billions and is held by many as the pinnacle of world sport was a disgrace.

nono, i meant when he gave a goalkick to spain when it should have been a corner to holland instead (because the ball came off of the spanish wall) and soon after the goalkick spain scored. so without that mistake they might not have got they goal and maybe holland would have

i didnt think there was an offside issue because the ball didnt go straight to him after that happened like you said, but i didnt pay that much attention

Oh yeah. Maybe. Not the worst of ref errors during this Cup, but some end up counting more than others.

I expect a WC final to be very rough -- they have nothing to hold back for, nothing to save their guys for. 8 Dutch yellow-carded (one 2x), and 5 Spaniards yellow-carded, though it did seem that the Spanish were more sticking up for themselves than initiating it. Nasty, not pretty football, but not surprising. The foot to the chest of Xabi Alonso was the one that really pissed me off. DeJong should have gotten a direct red card, that was not a yellow-card foul.

A final needs a ref who can impose discipline on the field. I thought Webb did an excellent job of making his authority felt, passing out cards left and right, hopefully keeping the broken bones and hospital visits to a minimum. Might have needed to go even farther, an earlier red card to really get them under control (and of course, I would have given it to DeJong). But honestly, other than that one really vicious foul, I thought Webb kept it from getting overly violent. I heard he used to be a cop, and he's a big, intimidating-looking guy. FIFA chose well. I don't know about the assistants, I didn't notice any egregious errors so I guess they were fine. Or was the lost Dutch corner kick the linesman's fault?
edit -- OK, I didn't watch the news, I see that what people are complaining about is that Webb was too soft, not that he handed out too many cards. Yeah, I agree. DeJong should be banned from the game forever.

I felt so bad for el Niño Torres, he finally got into the game, and then on that long breakaway run you could see he just shouldn't have been playing, he just stopped running, obviously hurt. I only hope he didn't aggravate the injury. But who can blame him wanting to play in the final, even if only a few minutes?

lol i didnt say that

i dont understand why the referees assistants dont have little monitors or something to watch replays on. we all get to see everything perfectly on the tv, with white lines appearing to help us decide if they were offside etc, so why shouldnt a referee whos actually on the pitch. it must be hard to them to pay attention to every player on that big pitch and it would save all this controversy that happens everytime they make a mistake

that psychic octopus was on the radio today! well, not literally cos that wouldnt make for very interesting listening, but they talked about him and said he should predict lottery numbers

im gonna miss the world cup :(

@Reginaterrae I certainly do not expect the final to be "very rough" far from it. I expect a WC final to be played with passion and determination, that all the players will try to extract every ounce of their skill. We are after all at that moment watching two of the best if not the best teams in the world play for the ultimate trophy in the game.

The Netherlands did not show that passion or skill, rather they played like a team that knew it could not win by skill and so resorted to hacking.

I am not alone in this, to quote the great Johan Cruyff

""This ugly, vulgar, hard, hermetic, hardly eye-catching, hardly football style, yes it served the Dutch to unsettle Spain. If with this they got satisfaction, fine, but they ended up losing."

and

"They were playing anti-football."
