What are your thoughts about the HPV vaccine? ( http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDFact-HPV-vaccine-young-women.htm#why )

This is the first time I've ever heard of it myself. Doing a quick google search I found that YouTube also had some videos on it. Wiki also has a document on it..

I think that if I can prevent my daughter from acquiring a form of cancer by the simple process of getting her vaccinated against a common virus before she becomes sexually active, she's going to go get the frakking vaccine. I'm aiming for sometime around her ninth birthday, which is about a year from now.

I think it is a good idea, but sadly it is a rather painful and troublesome shot. I have heard of tales of girls passing out after getting the jab.

There is no proof yet that the HPV vaccine works or does not work against cervical cancer. Every female who does get the HPV
vaccine still has to get annual pap exams by their doctor. The vaccine has many contradictions and can cause problems for some young girls.

Oh...and the reason the HPV vaccine is ONLY given to young females of a certain age is because anyone who chooses to have this vaccine becomes part of a nation-wide research study to determine IF this vaccine is truly beneficial and capable of preventing Cancer.

As for the ad campaign, "I want to be one less"...I think it should be..."I want to be one more" ...guinea pig for research purposes.

I'm avoiding it for the time being. If they show it is useful then maybe. It hasn't been out long enough to know of any long term side effects and I am at low risk of getting it anyway.

Have like a month left until vaccine stops being free here

Chance at avoiding cervical cancer TAKE IT! Sparing even one female of that is worth the risks!

I personally don't want to get the vaccine. It's a fairly new drug, and I would much rather wait until there's more long-term facts known. At this point, for all we know it could cause old-age problems. Once this information is available, I'd consider it for sure.

There are always people who pass out after getting an injection. I do not think you can attribute that to the fact it was a HPV vaccine.

I have had all three shots of the vaccine as I believe it has been well tested and that it can lower my chance of getting cervical cancer. It was provided free to women under 28 in Australia for a while. I was told I am a good candidate as I have never had HPV. I will still get a PAP test every two years though.

At that link the CDC doesn't mention the recently identified HPV-oral cancer link.

The reference lab used by our hospital still does not screen men for HPV; so, it would be quite a quantum leap to next be confident of a good anti-HPV titer in men. That reference lab has regional centers all over. I think diagnostics still need improvement.

I think availability is a good thing. However, there are choices involved in exposure to HPV. I have no confidence that complications only affect the careless. Legislation has been proposed at the state level to mandate the vaccine.

I think it's a great idea. I wish this would have been available to me when I was a teen. They also need to drop the age for smear testing in the UK as having set from the age of 25 upwards is a bit silly considering people can get cancer below that age. I was having problems when I was about 23 but, because of my age, I was actually refused a smear test when I asked for one. When I was finally granted a smear test at the age of 25, it was found that I had the strain of HPV that can cause cancer and that it had attacked my cervical cells to the point where I had to have corrective minor surgery to help it heal. I now have to have smear tests every six months as well as visual check ups to monitor my progress. So I would urge all teenage girls and young women to have this vaccine if they are offered it as it may spare you the crap I have been through this past year.

I'm getting it done and have had my 1st dose. Smears are still important cause there is more than one way to cet cervical cancer. I was alright when I had it done, they gave biscuits and water out. I only had a heavy arm but I guess it happens with other vaccines.

It has potential, but I think that it was promoted unethically. Would like to see longer term studies, benefit/risk and cost/benefit studies.

I'm getting it.

Thanks for calling it the HPV vaccine, not the cervical cancer vaccine. I've been correcting people about that since they first mentioned it. (It vaccinates you against the virus that causes cancer, NOT the cancer itself.)

In the leaflet they gave us, they had to clarify that the vaccination doesn't stop you getting pregnant. I lol'd, as if someone's so stupid they think you can be vaccinated against pregnancy.

I hate vaccines. I had the first of the HPV vaccines done this week. It makes your arm throb for a while but it isn't too bad. I still have two more to go though. :?
