I wanted to do martial arts tournaments when I was studying back in Memphis, but never had the time. However, I might be starting the Shorin-Ryu style at University. I'm not sure if they go to tournaments or not, but it would be fun to go to one.

I just so happen to be a first-degree black belt in shorin-ryu karate :)

I always performed terribly when it came to sparring (imo it was because I ended up fighting against tae-kwando wusses who would throw ridiculous and completely impractical kicks that would just magically tag me) but kata was my forte.

Just getting used to the atmosphere of karate tournaments will improve one's performance... at least it did for me.

Shorin-ryu? I'm thinking about taking that at uni. Would you recommend it?

Well I've only had experience with that, shotokan, and ishin-ryu (forgive my possibly butchered spellings) and I believe that shorin-ryu is the most real-world applicable. The moves in shorin-ryu seem to feel much more powerful with less flare and more business. If you have the time and energy to dedicate to it then yes I do indeed recommend it. Make sure you find a high-quality dojo/sensei so you don't waste your time.

Most people will spend 3 years or more getting their black belt and it really gets rewarding around the brown belt level. gl man
