As far back as I can remember I would usually spend hours and hours and hours just lying in bed surrounded by darkness. Very boring. I still do but I go to sleep much later now so its not as bad, although I wake up later because of it. Do you think it could be all the stress from being misunderstood by everyone around me 24/7 that causes it?

Yes, when you can't turn off the inner voice. That's one more thing anti-depressants helped me with. If I still have trouble I try to concentrate entirely on my breathing.

Hi 122112, I agree with Aimless about the inner voice, not being able to turn it off. I take sleeping tablets, but still have to rock myself to sleep, usually takes about an hour of rocking before I feel comfortable enough to lie still and go to sleep. Have you tried some sort of motion before bed, I also have a rocking chair I sit in quite often when Im stressed. Do you have any self soothing things like that you do??

Yes, I have trouble sleeping. Especially when I am really tired, ironically enough. I think of my mind as this giant machine, constantly churning out thoughts, ideas, connections, past experiences, etc. And when I try to turn it off, it takes a really long time to shut it down, accompanied by hissing hydraulic noises and the clashing of gears. :) Not only that, if I wake for any reason, it doesn't take long to start the thinking machine going again.

Rocking myself helps, sometimes. My insomnia even fights my meds, unfortunately.

I have problems turning off my brain also. I had managed to stop that for like a year but since June I have been having sleep problems again. I don't think its really the stress from people misunderstanding me , more just the depressing thoughts of thinking about stuff that I shouldn't think about because it never leads to anything positive. I am trying really hard to stop thinking about all those things again so far it's not working. And I really don't want to take pills.

I started taking antidepressants for Depression but one of the positive side effects was I was able to turn my brain off (usually) when going to sleep. If something really big is going on I will still have trouble but I no longer lie awake with my regrets running through my mind.

I go through bouts of insomnia, weeks to months where I sleep a mere 3-4 hours (at most) a nights. Currently I am managing with the help of benadryl, earplugs and an eye mask.

I have problems sleeping, though I find I actually sleep much better now than when I was a kid. I still have nights where I just can't sleep, wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep, and wake up insanely early and can't go back to sleep, but usually I'm just so exhausted at night I can fall asleep fairly quick, whereas I used to toss and turn for hours every night. I find melatonin helps, so does exercising during the day and taking a hot shower/bath a few hours before bed.

I do if I am either stressed, or in a hot, stuffy room.

I have a problem, but it's a bit unusual. When most people would be entering Stage 4 sleep, I wake up. So my nights are generally 90 minutes of sleep, 30 minutes awake. Repeat.

It's better now that I'm back on my Risperdol, but I still don't look forward to going to sleep for those 30 min-1 hour that I spend thinking before I fall asleep.
I used to stay up to 1-3am almost everyday, so it's much better.

I do-and I am getting very discouraged by it, and it seems resistant to treatment, see my recent post. I not only suffer from insominia, but I suffer from chronic nightmeres too.

I definately believe it has to do in part with my tramatic experiences of how society reponds to me.
