I'm skinny as hell, I haven't been eating healthy, and I could use some more socializing, so I'm thinking of joining a gym. How do I know what a good one is? Well I'll have to get my dieting habits taken care of myself, but a gym is the first step to getting ripped.

I know what a good martial arts place is. I know about the marketing BS they use, like black belts in three years, a million belts instead of 6 or 8 till black belt, testing every 2 months, and giving belts away like candy on halloween. But I dunno about gyms.

Like what should I watch out for in contracts? Does a contract automatically mean it's BS? And yeah, just basically let me know what a good gym generally is.

Well I recommend you join for a month or less to start because some gyms are just over crowded. I used to go to a gym before where at busy times there could be more people than machines/benches. Totally unproductive and waste of time. Also make sure they have a high enough number of benches where the free weights. (again this is relative to the number of people there). You could see if there is one around who offers personal trainers for cheap, so you could get him to make you a routine if you have never been to the gym before , if not do some research (research is probably better if you interested at all).
As far as contracts go I don't think you can really get screwed over.

Heres a good site to get some basics :

The only time I worked out, the day after I was so sore I could'nt move. But I did everything the teacher told me to do. So if you want to be in pain everyday after you work out, have fun. Other people tell me that as you work out, the pain goes away. But I really don't want to see if thats true by putting my body through that again.

If you do want to get ripped, make sure you are doing it for yourself and not some dumb reason to look good for women. There is alot more to it then looks.

It's normal to get extremely sore the first few times or after taking a long break.

That looks nice.

Also, getting your own cardio equipment would be good. No crowds there.

La fitness and Bally Fitness are the two major gyms in the US. I go to La fitness I love it there. They have a pool several rackball courts, a basketball court, weight lifting machines, cardio, ect. They also offer classes like yoga and cycling. Bally and La offer month to month payments. This can be misleading however be there is an app fee. It really depends on what us are using it for. If u just want to build muscle. There are cheap gyms out there with just muscle building machines. However usually only body building chicks go to those kinds of gyms. Also you dont have to go to a gym to get ripped. Look at the Marines (pushups, pullups, dips, crunches, squats)!
