they can make you wired, but it has a calming effect for most people with adhd. i'm on methylphenidate, another stimulant, not amphetamine based though, and it calms me. definitely don't take them before bed or you won't be sleeping. it cuts my appetite a bit, but i've found this effect has died down a bit lately. as for mood, it calms me, makes me less hyperactive, allows me to focus better, nothing drastic, but my friends do notice it sometimes when i'm off them.
I take this as well- it is the generic name for Ritalin. I was taking a bunch of antidepressants up until a couple years ago, then citalopram, which I stopped in April and I started the Welbutrin, then in May the methylphenidate as well. My pdoc said I might not have to take the Wellbutrin any more, but he kept my prescription going because I had been severely depressed up to that time and it may be a comorbid with ADHD and other things.
Anyway, the dexadrine may help with the depression too. You have to give yourself time to get clear the other meds and allow the new stuff to work. The antidepressants were changinf how your brain chemicals were working- the wiring in your brain. All these meds work on different chemicals and you have to wait for the old stuff to wear off and those chemicals to go back to normal.
The stimulants can suppress appetite, which is helpful when you are trying to lose weight, but it can get to the point you don't want anything at all to eat. I dropped 15 lbs so fast I didn't even realize that the Ritalin was doing it- it actually started when I was just taking Wellbutrin. At that point I started taking it after I ate in the morning so I would get better nutrition. I have lost 20 lbs altogether, but the last 5 came off slower because I was eating more, which is fine. It is usually better to take weight off slowly anyway. Im happy to be back to my smaller jeans, but I am maintaining it with exercise and diet now- the Ritalin is not supposed to be a diet pill.
