I've been getting sick with colds much more often then usual (4 really bad times since September) and when I get a cold, I GET a cold, meaning I miss a bunch of school. Is there anyway to try to boost my immune system?

Mmmm, Theraflu Toddy (don't forget the twist of lemon).

That'll make ya feel a little better, but it won't keep you from getting sick. I'd recommend not associating with humans, that's where the bug comes from. If you can't do that, try seeing a doctor if it keeps coming back like that, it might be something other than a cold, like some resilient flulike bug that never really goes away, but lies dormant for a few months and comes back, which would seriously weaken the immune system over time. You might just need a series of antibiotics to knock it out once and for all.

I take a vitamin C every day.
Sleep is probably the # 1 key for me to avoid colds.
Then as my nurse wife always preaches, wash wash wash the hands!
A healthy diet might help too.

Vitamin D is also highly linked to immunity. Since you live in Canada, my guess would be you may not be getting a lot of sunlight during the winter. :)

Do some Google searches and/or talk with your doc on dosing. You can't take mega doses because it builds up in your body. Many docs think you can take 2000 D3/day without a blood test, but check with your doc to be safe. I take a higher level because mine was so low.

To avoid colds make sure you do not pick your nose or touch your face with your hands without washing your hands with great care first. Many colds and flu germs contaminate your hands, then if you touch your eyes, nose or mouth you then transfer the germs to a membrane where they can enter the body.

Also make sure you never swap glasses with anyone by mistake, that is an ideal way to catch a cold or flu.

You should NEVER swap or share a glass with anyone... nor, offer a drink from YOUR water bottle or soda pop. Give the thirsty person money to buy a soda or water instead. Sharing drinks is a sure way to get mononucleosis... or worse, spinal menigitis... two diseases that can commonly occur on college and university campuses...a lot more dangerous than a getting a cold.

Better to be "safe" then, sorry.

School locks you in an airtight room with dozens of people, many of them coughing out viruses which then float through the air. It's not going to be easy to avoid them.

I've had two in the last three weeks.

Things that might help (it is not a recipe for a single meal ;) you can choose what you like)
  • garlic
  • ginger
  • alcohol
  • honey
  • vitamin C
  • calcium
  • enough of sleep and rest
  • avoiding stress

edit: Well, I don't know if you can drink alcohol, anyway in small doses it is good.

I have been more prone to common colds the last few years. I am putting this down to the aging process. One of my receptionists has put me on to Olive Leaf Extract as a preventative measure. OLE is available at health food stores in liquid form. Basically, I take one teaspoon full a day and so far, no colds.

As with most things that are good for you, OLE tastes ghastly so don't say I didn't warn you!

I don't know if this is something that actually helps or if I am drawing a false conclusion here, but lately I have have very good luck with zinc tablets. I'm not talking about sore throat lozenges with zinc in them. What I take when I feel the first symptoms of a cold is a zinc tablet (you can get them in the vitamin section of most drug stores)

One warning, however. DO NOT TAKE THEM ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Even if you have eaten, when you take one, you might end up feeling nauseous for as much as an hour afterward. Usually it's pretty mild, but they will make you feel kinda sick. On the upside, each time I have taken them, I the symptoms of a cold have disappeared by the next day. Of course I also get rest so that is probably contributing to the quick recovery.
