The old wives' tale about eating cheese before bed gives you nightmares is partially true. A 2005 survey found that Stilton cheese causes many people to have especially vivid and unusual dreams. English brie and Red Leicester have been mentioned as well.

Has anyone had a similar experience after eating pungent cheeses? I'm thinking of using this technique to induce lucid dreams. I suspect it's also the high B6 content found in cheese in general and possibly the mere suggestion of having a strange dream after eating it that could account for the effects.

Perhaps its bacteria involved in the fermenting dairy. That fuzzy fungi in bleu cheese sure looks like it ought to make you see things. It looks nearly identical to the stuff on the underside of a Psylocybin mushroom

What is "pungent" mean? Im gonna have to get my dictionary out, because alot of these posts have words that I dont know what mean and I sound stupid asking what it is.

I haven't heard about cheese giving you weird dreams but Im gonna try it before I go to bed.

Lucid dreams are awesome.

I do like to have a slice of cheddar before bedtime, its is supposed to promote good bacteria in your teeth as you sleep, I do like stilton and most runny moldy cheeses, even though I am allergic to blue cheese mold, I get a weird cravings for it several times a year

Cheese is a good source of Tryptophan, an amino acid which later on gets converted to Serotonin. I'm guessing that consuming lots of cheese, or certain aged cheeses will lead to increased Serotonin, which has the tendency to create more vivid dreams and greater dream recall.

You get similar effects if you were to take 5-HTP or St John's Wort.
