Just curious, I recently ran my first marathon in EXACTLY 3 hours and 30 minutes. I hope to do my next marathon under three hours and qualify for the Boston Marathon.

good job matt....i completed about 30 marathons before the end came. didn't start running till 30 or 31 and ran my last at 39. never less than 3-30. slow twitch muscles. also did ultra running. ran marathons on 6 continents, and was working on a trip to antarctica so i could have all 7 under my belt.

started running to battle depression. wow, did it work. i also became a bicycle racer and a free climber. at 39, i was in the best physical and mental condition ever. it was wonderful.

then i was run over by a drunk driver while training. serious injuries. couldn't walk for over a year. worked hard to be able to walk and ride. then in a 'no good deed goes unpunished moment', i was in a serious car crash and broke my neck plus other injuries.

wouldn't change a thing. those few years were worth the price. finally felt good about myself

keep running. train hard. running in the boston race is something all runners strive for. good luck to you.

Wow, tough luck danandlouie. That is just awful. At least you know you can rely on your mental strength and resolve to get you through just about anything.

Since you were at the top of your game, maybe you can give me some pointers. I have more of a muscular build and have more of a fast twitch make-up. What is the best way to decrease my mile time? I usually go for short bursts then relax to a slower pace. If I try to run at a constant, faster rate my muscles begin to tighten and I forced back to the slower pace.

Matt55, I have would love to try a marathon. It is sort of a long range goal. I only run now to improve my cardiovascular endurance and keep weight off.

I had a friend that ran Boston. I don't for the life of me know his times, though he ran several per year. Last time I talked to him, he was in training for that 100 mile all day super marathon.

wish i could help more than by saying: train for your goal. i've always been slow so running a really fast mile is something i never tried for. no matter what you're aiming for, everyone need a good base to increase your aerobic capacity. maybe running slow for long distances to build the base and then do speed work to increase your pace. forget the short fast bursts for awhile. getting aerobically fit can never hurt.

joining a running club is always a good idea. if you can deal with huge ego's, there will be someone to give advise.
don't know if you can find one in the center of the universe.

Oh I missed this topic. I've not been posting....

Good job on the marathon. If you keep training you will be able to get in around 3 hours. That's around 7 min/mile. Do-able. Do you have a training program prepared for you, or are you just having fun with it and running when you feel like it?

I run marathons... but first we swim 2.4 miles and then bike 112 before the marathon. Does this count? :)
