i have to have a colon x-ray (barium in the backdoor) done on monday morning, so i couldn't eat anything solid since friday evening.

i can drink broth or eat jello, but it is not enough to keep the growlies (and crankies) at bay. i normally eat small meals every 2 or 3 hours, so for me this is very unusual.

tonight i have to take laxtives. this is not going to be fun.

anyone have experiences with this test? is anyone out there as much of a crybaby as me? lol

years ago, i had the barium swallow for an ulcer. the technician asked me to drink some so she could check the settings or something. it was funny because the tech didn't say to just have a sip - she said, "ok, drink it"... so i did. i drank the whole thing. before she was ready for me. so.... i had to drink a whole extra glass. *heave*.

what is extra-funny was that the same thing happened to a friend of mine! clearly, the instructions are, ummmm, unclear.

lotusblossom, thank you for your kind words! i am shaky and jittery already. husband was going to cook bacon for himself this morning, but thankfully he refrained. i would have gone off on him, probably! baaaaconnnnnnn...... :pig:

i was given clear instructions. i had the "creamy vanilla smoothie." it had a picture of a milkshake and some vanilla beans and it tasted like patient compliance.

you just made a cranky person laugh out loud! "tasted like patient compliance"? that is sheer genius. :lmao:

Perhaps you could have fruit and vegetable juices instead of broth or jello? think of the sugar levels in jello, that isn't so healthy. Also gelatin is made from boiled animal bones, which doesn't sound tasty to me.
I have done liquid days before, felt fantastic after, but as I have low blood sugar and had a bladder issue, cannot any more.

thanks for the suggestions! i was allowed to also drink clear fruit juice (not veggie juice), so i drank a lot of apple juice. the jello and broth were at least a bit filling, so it was slightly more satisfying than other choices. juice has a lot of sugar in it too, so it's sort of like choosing between two evils.

as i lay shaking and insomnic from lack of solid food by the end of the second day, i considered that there are, indeed, some people who choose to periodically have liquid diets for health reasons. i suppose each person has their own constitution, but i decided to never ever do that to myself again (except under doctor's orders, like for this occasion), as it definitely did not agree with me!

i did have it done yesterday, thanks for asking! they did some extra shots, which i am hoping means that they couldn't find anything wrong and wanted to be extra-sure. i don't get the results until thursday evening when i see my doctor. it is almost certainly nothing, but the doctor needed to rule out all possibilities before proceeding with further advice.

the good news is that i lost 2 kg/4.5 lb over the weekend. but i know the weight will pile back on now that i am eating again!

i got the results early. i was too stressed out so i called the doctor's office and they had the x-ray report after within 24 hours. i was told that the results would only take 24 to 48 hours to be received, but i was allowing 72 hours just in case.

i have what appears to be a large polyp causing a blockage. i have been referred to a gastrointestinal specialist for a colonoscopy (and probable polypectomy). the doctor thinks the polyp is almost certainly benign and noncancerous. there is a small chance it could just be something like a fecal impaction in there, but the colonoscopy will tell for sure.

i don't know how quickly i will get in to see the specialist. it will depend on how highly my case is prioritized, and whether there is a backlog.

thanks for listening, lotusblossom! and anyone else brave enough to follow this icky thread.

(i didn't get my appetite back yet. but that's probably a good thing! i ate cheese and crackers as my first meal after fasting)

I hope everything works out hyperlexian, hope your health stays good, and that the polyp is nothing for concern.

I hope everything's okay with your colon. To go through health issues alone is really difficult..we aren't "brave" to read your reactions, just concerned,my mother is a RN and I naturally feel concern for anyone going through any health issues.
Hang in there,do some mediation to calm your mind and body. Hope you Thanksgiving will be alright, anyone will be around?
