i have a question- what would cause a person's willy to go numb after riding a bicycle? i ruled out saddle compression of the perinium, as i have a perineum-protecting saddle. i ruled out posture, as i ride upright on a special bike with forward pedals, so there is never any pressure on the package and baggage. i stand up and pedal every few minutes for the abundant hills around there i live. i am at my wit's end with this, willy doesn't even go into pins and needles, he just goes ice-cold numb after a few minutes of biking, this just started happening a few days ago. i've read various things, that it could be athlerosclerosis [hardening of the arteries due to aging] and from not wearing a jock strap. i have been on beta blockers and statins for a decade or so [as well as a lowfat/low sugar diet] but have not ever had this symptom until now. there are no other cardiac/circulatory symptoms [no swooning, no shortness of breath, no numbness of other body parts]. just wondering... i hate growing old and infirm! :( HELP!

thanx in advance for any helpful info :)

It could be all sorts of things. Blood circulation, drafting wind, outside temperature, neurologic problems, sickness, medicine side effects, etc.

But is it just your manhood that is having this problem? testes and the surrounding areas?
Inability in that area?

I'm no doctor just a knowledge base on this, but I should ask him/her about it.

thanx for your reply. :) the baggage is fine, it is only the package which goes numb. a few minutes of walking and [discreetly] massaging with with warm fingers gets the feeling and circulation back after a few minutes. so far it has not had any global effect on the organ's musicality otherwise, not that it has been especially musical these last few years. it has been in the low 50 degree range here, and that temperature has not affected it in the past. the medicinal side effects have not manifested in this way before. one other guess as to a possible factor, is that my thighs have become markedly more muscular these last few months- i wonder if they are hogging the blood supply?

might be the thighs, better be safe then sorry and see a doctor.

Reading the Package insert/Patient information leaflet for side effects might also help.

I have had that kind of thing happen, but I do not recall every figuring it out. I would suspect it has something to do with circulation (obviously) as affected by some kind of dysfunction or malfunction within the system that otherwise causes and holds an erection ... kind of like a check valve somehow blocking flow in a wrong direction.

Along with that, I have also had some kind of pinched nerve problem in my lower back occasionally causing pain in my scrotum ... and it has been kind of embarrassing to have to go to the chiropractor to be rid of a nut ache.

Do you normally have a good flow of urine or do you possibly have any prostrate issues? Doxazosin is an inexpensive med that has helped me a lot there. In any case ...

Before going to a doctor, I would try to investigate the source/cause of the numbness by riding the bike without sitting at all, and then at another time just sitting on the bike without doing any riding ... and stuff like that.

as far as i know, my prostate numbers are ok. i have no issues with urination. the rigidity of my tumescence is only about half of what it was when i was 10 years younger, no more "morning wood" for me :(

Any leg pain at all? Do you smoke?

It could well be peripheral vascular disease if you're already being treated wih BB and statins. I know it costs money, but you should probably get it checked out- if you leave it it can get worse.

That said, how far do you cycle every day? I doubt even a special saddle is 100% numb-proof!

I'm sorry... I know to YOU it's not funny at all, but...

:lmao:

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, in all seriousness, I've had all sorts of aches and pains just as everyone else does throughout life. I'm only in my early 30s, and it depresses me because new and unusual stuff has started setting in and when it isn't frustrating, it's damned annoying.

For the second day in a row I'm having neck pain and chest pain, obviously from sleeping in the wrong position. My left knee pops every time I twist my leg just a little, which in turn leads to soreness after a while that doesn't go away for weeks. I'm guessing bursitis. I've counted 7 colds/upper respiratory attacks just this cold season, up from roughly 2 or 3 by the same time last year. It's been a physically miserable year for me this year. Two years before I had 3 outbreaks of boils, quite possibly staph, and antibiotics didn't do a bit of good the first time around. One boil on my upper right side was just a little bigger than a golf ball. I've had weird stuff in my life, like molluscum contagiosum and shingles, but NOTHING like the flesh-eating disease I had back then. Fortunately for me that was as bad as it ever got.

Suffice it to say, constantly being ill and busy doing work that keeps me predominantly sedentary, I'm horribly out of shape and going out for Mexican once or twice a week doesn't help matters. But I'm trying. I hit the treadmill every morning at 4:30 and go 1.5 miles, just trying to get back in the habit. And I love bike riding.

As to your specific problem: The same exact thing happens to me. To be honest, this never happened to me when I was younger. NEVER. I'm thinking part my problem is just being overweight, just enough to put pressure on whatever nerve it is down there. I haven't taken any corrective measures at all. I just try to tolerate it. My bike is a Trek Lime--just a nice automatic 3-speed that's good for a comfortable ride around the block, although I used to bike to work AND drop my son off at daycare back when I lived closer. I noticed the numbness when I'd bike for 7 miles one way. But, then again, if I was trying to do something like that, which amounts to about 15 miles round trip, I wouldn't be able to ride again for 2 or 3 days.

Okay, uhm I have experience in at least 50% of your problem. I'm an avid cyclist but I'm a girl. Do you use a high-quality chamois pad? I don't know if you already tried this, but the right cycling shorts can make all the difference. I'm not talking about the cheap crap you get from sporting goods stores. You need to get the comfortable high-quality stuff from a cycling-specific store.

no leg pain or muscle pain in general. never smoked nor drank alcohol. only an ice-cold package is all.

i will do as a web doc suggested, and not bike for a week, then i will do as leejosepho suggested and zero-out physical problems associated with riding a bike [i.e, sitting on it while stationary to see if it is the seat- i already know that standing while pedaling doesn't give me the frozen pork like sitting and pedaling has done. if it is a problem with my particular body build [tall and gangly] riding a bike, then i may just have to give up the last exercise i can do out here in the sticks and just get fat. but fat still beats numbnutter.

about 2 hours, up and down hills which combines aerobic and anaerobic exercise. i combine this with calisthenics such as pushups and crunches and inverse push-ups. this has made me fairly taut like when i was younger and it would be a beech to have to give it up and lose the physical conditioning i've gained over the past 2 years. again, i reiterate that this regimen only recently caused this problem, within the last week.

yea, doesn't aging suck? i hate it, and the only thing good about it is i get to be that much closer to matriculation into heaven. i can dig how you're feeling because when i was your age, i'd been discharged from the military for several years, and i had gained quite a big of weight and was very flabby. i had all sorts of problems with aches and pains and had poor sleep with apnea, and i ate poorly. things came to a head when i couldn't fit into a single article of my clothing, and because i was too cheap to buy new used clothes [i'm a real cheapskate] i decided my only choice was to get back into army shape. for a while i was able to run, until arthritis in my joints made that impossible, then i took up swimming a mile's worth of laps at the local Y, until i had to move out in the sticks 2 hours away from any public swimming pool, so bicycling was the only thing left for me, and it worked very well, it kept my BMI below 25, and even reduced my arthritic aches and pains. being fit is my last connection with any semblance of youth, and having to lose my fitness over a numb nabob makes me feel downright senescent. :(

you can take this or leave this, but i swear as soon as i got back in shape some years back, those same types of ailments you described above which also plagued me, largely disappeared. i am serious. fitness enables your body to better fight-off the nasties.

hospital coding for me, wasn't a physically taxing job, so it put more of an onus on me to exercise regularly in my spare time. being the cheapskate i am, i never really considered myself able to afford to go out and eat rich restaurant meals, so the money i saved went to the YMCA membership, whose facilities were chock full of things to burn all the stored calories away. i wish they had such out in the sticks. anyways, the key thing to remember about biking, is that the bike has to be adjusted to fit YOU, otherwise it is all too easy to get perineal injuries and joint injuries. i admire your determination to get back in shape 8) so i hope you fit your bike properly.

i don't know how many miles, but i am guessing i've been biking the same distance you described. i went strictly by time on the [perineum-protecting] saddle, approx. 2 hours a day, riding up and down hills and grades, which is a great combined aerobic/anaerobic exercise, especially when standing and pedaling up the steep hills in low gear. the strange thing for me, is there was never any crotch numbness, only peter numbness. anyways, if i were you, taking up the bike again, i would not just tolerate the numbness, but would take the trouble to avoid it if at all possible.
