I read that working out with music makes you work out harder.

What kind of music would you use to this effect?

Sure, I think it can motivate you to work out harder, if you use the correct music for you and the moment. I think it's just really motivating for some, while others may prefer silence because that's what they require in order to focus. I would listen to all sorts of music ranging from Various types of Metal, Funk, Old Rap, and even some electronica. Generally, I prefer something "hard" or "violent" with a nice rythm. I lift on the regular and I run so it helps to have some music like that when I'm trying to push myself or just get through a crappy day of working out. If you like Metal check this out... It certainly helps you maintain a consistent rhythm, and it also helps with timing - its easier to push yourself to keep up reps if you have audible markers within the music that late you know how much farther you have to go to the end of the set. And for some, really aggressive music helps motivate them to push and squeeze harder and lift longer and heavier.

In our muay thai class my instructor really likes late 90's Chicago house and progressive trance - which works fine as long as its nothing too nostalgic, otherwise I've been known to choke up a little ;). For hitting the weights though, whatever you're in the mood for. A good dose of headbanging never hurts.

Eurodance music. Not much in the way of lyrical content, but it has really good beats and melodies.

Hip-hop can be good to exercise to for the same reasons as Eurodance.

I'd also recommend rock groups like Evanescence, H.I.M., and Nightwish. The lyrical content is deeper, but you still get the blood-pumping melodies.

I usually listen to my iPod on random, which is for the most part rock songs. I find that I am able to go harder if the song is really fast and intense.
