A paradoxical reaction or paradoxical effect is when medical treatment, usually a drug, has the opposite effect to that which would normally be expected.

A doctor prescribed some Lorazepam in place of Xanax for me to take just prior to my MRI exam yesterday, and I later decided I never again ever want to take that stuff! I took the .5 pill a little past noon and had my exam at 1PM and all went well at that time, but then while napping (or while at least trying to take a nap) later in the day, I had to force myself to remain calm and just stay right there in bed amidst some unrest and anxiety almost as bad as I have ever experienced.

< Sorry, my post was erased....technical problems>

Sorry about your adverse reaction to Lorazepam and your AS *may* be relevant. I have sporadic allergies (dust/dander) and sometimes must take diphenhydramine (Benadryl) as a necessity. I have a very peculiar reaction in that I become a, well.......whiny, cranky, agitated toddler. Benadryl is by prescription in the UK as it induces sleep for most adults.

For instance, Ritalin, an upper, is effectively prescribed for hyperactive children. Ritalin stimulates the part of the brain that controls behaviour and emotions in children and why it works. Conversely, in adults, Ritalin is excitatory.

One time I had surgery and had to take prescription pain medicine (yuck). Very peculiar in that I had an *almost* psychotic reaction: My sense became very acute where I'd actually be jarred awake by hearing noises from the walls, the clock, etc. Never had I been in that sort-of state! My GP noted too that my adverse reaction may be due to my "condition" (Asperger's).

Hope you're feeling better and be sure to tell your GP so you do not have that experience again. Yikes.
