I am hypothyroid and I need to lose some weight. One problem is that I have a problem with hunger pains. I feel weak and sick if I am too late for a meal. Years ago I had a thyroid crisis and I think part of it may be emotional. If you have never had a thyroid crisis, you don't know how it feels. It feels that if you don't eat soon, you will die. It is like a person who had to be saved from drowning being afraid of water and learning how to swim. Now I can't go very long without eating or if I cut back too much on my meal, I feel ill. I cannot cut back enough to lose any weight. My hunger pains can be more intense than labor and I have had four natural births. I don't want to take tylenol constantly in order to lose weight and be able to sleep at night. I cannot sleep at all if I am hungry. If I exercise regularly, I gain weight.
Anyone have any suggestions? I am afraid of diet pills because I am very sensitive to stimulants. Just one cup of tea makes my heart act up.

First, find out from a doctor how much you should weigh. Then, try substituting healthier foods, for some of the less healthy foods you eat. Also, do try to get some exercise. Weight gain from exercise is muscle, and that's healthy weight, not bad weight. The BMI thing is not the best way to judge how much you should weigh, because it doesn't factor in a person's build and muscles structure. If you are big boned and/or very athletic, your ideal weight is supposed to be higher than if you are small or medium boned, and/ or sedentary. There is another, more acurate "formula" for figuring out your ideal weight, based on your bone and muscle structure, but I can't remember what it is called. The doctor should know what it is, though.

I tried half a dozen ways to spell acurate to get the post form to like it. No luck, so we are stuck with my best guess. ;-D

Do not try to starve yourself. That will only hurt you. Try eating some healthy snacks when you get the munchies between meals, and a little before bedtime. Good luck! :-)

My husband lost a lot of weight with a very simple recommendation from his doctor: reduce your portions to half. Eat the half you used to. Simple at that. If you have problems waiting until the next meal, treat yourself with a snack, but choose low-calories snacks (fruits, veggies, sugar free jello...), also drink A LOT OF WATER. Thst way your stomach wobt feel empty. My husband eats when he is under stress (which is all the time), and this has worked for him. I hope it works for you, too.
