I can't stomach foods until at least 5-6 hours after I wake up. If I eat before then, I get a lot of stomach pain and I feel sick, and I bring some of it back up. How do you overcome this? Forcing myself to eat it, and introducing it bit by bit, hasn't helped.

Same. I've heard eating breakfast can have some positive effects. I have never felt those effects in the time period that I ate breakfast every morning and from what I've read about it recently, this idea seems to be a myth.

Hopefully it's a myth, since I can't eat for several hours after waking.

I am the same way-I just can't stomach food first thing in the morning-I just wait until I am comfortable eating and take t from there-there are no rules saying when you must eat-if you are not comfortable eating and just bring it back up-its a waste of food-eat when you feel ready.

Thanks for your replies. I hope it's a myth too. That rule of drinking 6-8 cups of water a day is definately a myth, yet everywhere you read tells it to be true. If it was true, you would get 4 cups worth from what you eat anyway, since food isn't bone dry.

I know a lot of slim people who can't stomach breakfast but who can eat tons more food than me during the day - the other day, my slim friend managed to eat a whole large take-away pizza, and I could only eat half, after eating nothing all day.

Do these people just have more muscle? I'm just so jealous!

Fast break topic

I find I am the opposite. I need to eat when I get up. I am very hungry. I do not eat before bedtime, so this may be why I am ravenous in the morning.

What breakfast does is to give you energy. I also drink two cups of coffee. One of my daughters (NT) hates to eat upon rising. The other two ( also NT) are similar to me in that they need to start off on a full stomach.

I also find that I eat less during the rest of the day than if I waited. My blood sugar is zilch before my cereal. Breakfast is my big, economical meal of the day.

This works for me, and I can only speak for myself. :)

Well thanks, but that really doesn't help me. If I go much over one small meal (say, half a pizza, or one sandwich) a day, then I put on weight. I usually eat around 4pm because like I said above - I feel really sick and my stomach HURTS if I eat much earlier. I can eat a *bit* more than this, like say a small bowl of cereal or one piece of fruit. I can only eat anything after 4pm ish though, and I don't get hungry after that meal.

Note that I don't starve myself all day - I don't feel hungry at all until that time. I mean, is this normal?

I think the reason is that your body is put into temporary famine mode and stores energy rather than using it when there's no guarantee (as far as your body knows) when your next meal is coming.

I've found that sleeping in and not eating till I wake up at elevenish or noonish (rather than sevenish or eightish) is a good way to gain weight.

Hmm, I'll have to try that. I tend to sleep on till noon on days I don't go to college, cos I generally have few hobbies and don't see the point in getting up.

How does it make you put on weight, though? It's just sleeping off the hours you didn't sleep the night before, surely?

No. Well it happens when I'm feeling more depressed (without anxiety) and I go into sleeping-a-lot mode. So I do sleep more on those days. It might not matter though, it might have to do with circadian rhythms and not waking at sunrise. I'm not sure exactly.

I think its what was already said - breaking your metabolism out of 'hold' mode.

Then again I think its just general advice. If your stomach really can't handle food before 5 hours after waking I don't think its worth trying to force it down early just for that purpose.

One of the reasons that breakfast is a good idea upon awakening, is that it kick starts your metabolism for the day. Then you are more likely to burn calories longer. I used to not be able to eat breakfast in the morning, but found that by sipping on warm green tea with honey, I got hungry within an hour of waking. Green tea gently stimulates your metabolism and makes you better able to tolerate food. It doesn't have to be strong. If you don't like the flavor of green tea, add a little lemon and honey to it. Also, if you eat before bed, you are likely still digesting that meal and that is why you aren't hungry in the morning.

Can you tolerate a piece of fruit in the morning? Fruit also stimulates a sluggish appetite. I usually have a cup of green tea and a cup of cherries, grapes, or a banana first thing. Then I am hungry enough for breakfast.

Some people like coffee in the morning, but I find it way too harsh and overstimulating. My fiance likes to drink coffee when he first rises, but isn't ready to eat for hours even after that. Coffee makes me very hungry and shaky, which is another reason I avoid it.

Nope, I cannot stomach a thing until later, except water. Any other flavoured drink, whether it be fruit juice (which is hard to stomach anyway) or anything artificially flavoured - I can't stomach either.

Maybe tea would work, since it's so weak. I've never tried green tea. Is there a particular green tea that's beneficial?

I get sick to my stomach if I try to eat anything shortly after waking. I have to wait 2-4 hours after waking before I can eat something.

Breakfast isn't anymore important than any other meal. You are better off having a tiny meal in the morning than nothing. The rest is a myth propagated by the breakfast industry that it is the most important. It is just as bad to skip lunch or dinner. You shouldn't skip any meals.

Heck, the best thing you can do for your metabolism is graze throughout the day. Just have a piece of fruit here and there. Don't eat a large quantity of food in one sitting. Instead, have little meals throughout the day.

But you should have something in the morning to get the proper nutrition you need and be your mentally sharpest. I would try drinking pre-made nutrition shakes. You can get a pack of six for seven dollars at a grocery store. I find that helps me not only feel my best but prevents weight-gain.

That's why you protest by eating pizza for breakfast! Let em know their evil scheme is backfiring.

Lol!

What's classed as the breakfast industry, anyway? Milk and cereal companies?
