Anyone taking/taken acetyl-l-carnitine for brain performance? I bought some and I started taking it at the end of last week (1x250mg tablet her day). I thought I was feeling a bit better at the weekend, but I'm on a bit of a downer today. So, I don't know what to make of it and I don't know if I need to take more to see any effects.

Any experiences?

i found it to be very strong, in a vaguely physical way - a sort of uneasy stimulation. I never dared take more than a small bit of powder at once, perhaps 20-40mg (it was a long time ago)

Perhaps i imagined it somewhat, but id be scared to take a 'complete' dose like the pills come in. It sounds like you are OK with it from the dosage your taking so you dont have any particular sensitivity, but id urge anyone reading to start with no more than 1/4 of the stated dose with this (and anything else really).

Im afraid i didnt try it consistently enough to evaluate it, i think for a reasonable trial youd be looking at several weeks, as over the space of a week or so your going to be having everyday ups and down anyway.

Thanks. The bottle says 'take one to three tablets per day', so I've decided to stick with one until I'm sure I'm OK with it. I feel like it had a positive effect on my mood, which I hadn't expected. I know I'd just started to take it, but I wasn't having a particularly good day (not bad, but no reason to feel so 'up'). My mood is usually related to what's going on in my life, this was different. I haven't taken today's tablet yet.

I have noticed a burn-out effect from most amino acids after multiple days of use, especially at the often high doses that are sold.

I have not tried acetyl-l-carnitine, but I have tried similar ones like DLPA and L-Tyrosine. I find that, like psych said, I can often achieve better results by breaking open the capsules and only using 1/4 dose at a time or so. Less up and less down that way, so more consistent and long term use can be achieved. Otherwise, I go on 'runs' of a couple good days followed by cruddiness where I typically feel the need to take a break and wash out for a bit.

It's not an amino, but I found 5htp to be far too strong in normal doses of 50 or 100mg, but it is occasionally very helpful for depression/anxiety/insomnia if I pop open a capsule and take 25mg or so. Even then, I still have to take breaks because I am super sensitive to serotonin stuff...
