I've not been since March.
I found it increasingly intimidating with the number of ultra macho guys who go.
I've lost all the weight I gained from the gym, and need to get back into a routine.

Help?

You like anime at all?

Here, that should be motivation. You could be as strong as Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star!

Besides that, I actually like the gym. As far as the big muscle dudes, you know, they're actually relatively friendly most of the time. Just try to be friendly with them, obviously. I tend to ask them for advice, too. Just throw on some headphones and go and get yourself as powerful as you'd like yourself to be. Most people at my gym tend to stay completely to themselves. But yeah, the big muscle dudes are pretty cool for the most part, I mean don't like, intentionally disrespect them or anything, but they've actually been really friendly and are always willing to help me with workouts or give me a spot or whatever.

You'll also gain the respect of the more muscled members of the gym with your dedication. Google the Stronglifts 5x5 weightlifting program. It's perfect for beginners, or those who have been away from the gym and want to see results.

As to your original concern about motivation, I find getting started is the easiest motivator. I may feel like uninspired walking into the gym, but after a 10 minute warm-up, I'm feeling better.

"You're going to get fit."

Tell that to yourself but don't tell anyone that you're going to do it. Ignore people when it comes to anything fitness related. It'll keep you motivated because you aren't doing it for their expectations but for yourself.

Trust me, keep it to yourself and keep fit. You won't even notice it when you hit it.

Also, the idea is to psychologically develop a persona.

So, think of a Navy Seal. Think about becoming one. Then, become one. Now, I don't mean ACTUALLY going out to become one. Rather, you take that role and adopt the traits of a Navy Seal. Thus, you push yourself harder everytime you work. You'll always tell yourself "one more mile" or "ten more push-ups" or "ten more reps".
