Lately the corn syrup industry has added this statement to their ads.

Here's what I want to know:

If my body can't tell the difference then how do they explain that every time I take even a few sips of anything containing corn syrup, it makes me sick to my stomach almost instantly?

I thought at first it was odd that this only happens when it's in drinks, but I've finally realized why. It has something to do with the fact that it's cold. But this does NOT happen at all when it's sugar. And it doesn't happen with corn sweeteners in hot foods, if it's not too much.

All I know is that the statement is extremely insulting to me. I know damned well my body can tell the difference. Sugar doesn't make me SICK!

Anyone else have this "instantly sick" feeling from drinking corn sweetened drinks?

Hi MrXxx,
I have never been a soft drink consumer, but I worked in a nutrition related field for many years and developed a special interest in researching about high fructose corn syrup. What I can tell you is, strong evidence suggests that HFCS and regular old sugar are NOT processed by the body in the same way. I can send you links to the research, suppressed by industry, it is out there if you look hard.

HFCS is a super concentrated form of sugar that is metabolized into fat much more readily than regular sugar -which itself is not too good for the body, but nowhere near as bad as HFCS. HFCS is undoubtably connected to the obesity and diabetes epidemic.

Problem is, the food industry and the drug industry (think about what FDA stands for) are thoroughly intertwined. Mass capitalism has only one objective: Make money for CEOs and stockholders. Foods that make you sick and send you to the doctor for drugs is good for business. This may not be a consciously planned idea, but rather a kind of "emergent" reality of mass capitalism. DO NOT BELIEVE what the food industry says about it's products. Your well-being is not their concern. If anything, the exact opposite is true.

I wouldn't trust a judgement an industry makes about itself.

Not sick, but after drinking or eating corn syrup, my throat hurts. It doesn't with cane or beet sugar.

Edited to add: My throat doesn't hurt with pure maple syrup or pure honey, either. But I can tell instantly if one of those has been adulterated with corn syrup.

Yeah, I know only too well.

Two words:

Food Inc.

OK, one more word:

SICKENING.

The corn syrup industry had one a few months ago that said "sugar is sugar".

Sugars include monosaccharides (e.g., glucose, fructose, galactose), disaccharides (e.g., sucrose, lactose, maltose), trisaccharides, and oligosaccharides.

Sugar ain't just sugar there, Sugar.

Check this out, from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligosaccharide

Oligosaccharide therapeutic effects

When oligosaccharides are consumed, the undigested portion serves as food for the intestinal microflora. Depending on the type of oligosaccharide, different bacterial groups are stimulated or suppressed.[3][4]

Clinical studies have shown that administering FOS, GOS, or inulin can increase the number of these friendly bacteria in the colon while simultaneously reducing the population of harmful bacteria.[5]
[edit] Sources

FOS and inulin are found naturally in Jerusalem artichoke, burdock, chicory, leeks, onions, and asparagus....

I've never had a problem with it. I also use it in candy when I make it.

Never touch the stuff. They're even more evil.

Well see, in candy, like taffy or hard candies, it doesn't bother me at all. It's only when it's in drink (presumably when it's cold), but then again, it probably just the high fructose crap, but I still think it's only when it's cold, because I can eat those godawful fake pancake syrups and that doesn't bother me much at all. I try to avoid that junk except for once a year or so though, during the holidays.

Regular old corn syrup is not the same thing as high fructose corn syrup ( HFCS) - the stuff they add to soda and many other processed foods. HFCS is a much more concentrated form of fructose.

Yeah I know what you mean, but I've built up a tolerance to it because I like Mountain Dew due to the caffeine content...though I honestly prefer the kind made with real sugar rather than corn syrup as it does not cause that feeling and I think tastes better the only issue is that ones kind of hard to find and for all I know it was limited edition.
