Melatonin Reactions?
It's been a while since there were any melatonin threads and especially any on adverse reactions. So I thought I would ask and see.
Has anyone had a bad reaction to Melatonin?
I took SleepMD, for two days and it REALLY messed me up!
First it didn't help me get to sleep. When I woke up, I had a huge feeling of dread. I had knots in my stomach, panic/anxiety attacks, stressed to the max, depressed, etc. I was in bad shape. And that was after only one night of taking it. I took it that night again not thinking that it would do that. When I had the same problems the next day...I realized oh man it might be that melatonin I took. Sure enough when I stopped taking it, most of the issues faded away.
I still have some lingering ones and I am gonna bring that up in my next dr appt. I had taken another brand of it before and had no issues, so I want to see if it was the melatonin or maybe some other "supplement" they threw in there. I also heard that the stuff is either made synthetic or from cow's pineal glands!

I take one every night before I go to bed. I am asleep in 15 minutes. And if I wake up several hours later I have no groggy feeling whatever.
Any medication that effects the prostrate I avoid after having to wear a cathater for weeks. Most sleeps medications aggravate this and my doctor suggested Melatonin. It is in the vitamin section at the grocery store. I never had any side effects, to me it is like taking vitamins. I was very skeptical at first to think this would help with sleep but know I am sold on it.

Melatonin did a great job of getting me to sleep, but it gave me adverse effects so it wasn't worth taking.
The adverse effects I experienced included nausea (first night only), grogginess, depression and heart palpitations. All of them eventually went away after I stopped taking melatonin. The heart palpitations took the longest to go away.
Every drug and supplement can have side effects. Some people can take a drug with little or no problem. Other people can take the same med at the same dose and have minor or more serious problems. If you have some serious problems with drug or supplement reactions you need to stop taking it. If it is prescribed by a doc, you need to tell them about the bad reactions, and that you have stopped taking the med. They need the feed back so they can pass it along to the manufacturers. They may also be able to give you an alternate med for your problem.

I have no experience with melatonin but I'm unable to take any medication because of the severe adverse reactions I have. I don't know why. If you have that sensitivity it might be good to look into more natural remedies. I had such strong negative reactions that I'm afraid to take any drugs at all. A calcium supplement like Inositol in hot tea can be very calming and relaxing and also very good for overall health. I hope you get some relief.
It works for me like magic, no adverse side affects whatsoever. Try taking the smallest dosage possible at first, however to see your tolerance. My doctor (whose into homeopathic remedies) told me to not take it every day, because the body could possibly develop a dependency on it and stop naturally producing it. Best of luck, I know how maddening insomnia is.
I took the 3mg dosage first, which was a different brand. I had no problems and it worked very well!
The new brand is what caused the problems and it doesn't say what dosage of Melatonin is in it. I am also wondering if any of the other ingredients might have caused the issues.

Every time I take melatonin I fall asleep like I would if I had taken some cold medicine. Groggy and kind of uncomfortable, although it does help me sleep through the night. My biggest issue taking it is that when I wake up, my brain is awake but my body can't move for a little while. It's pretty terrifying actually.
That's sleep paralysis...it happens more if you sleep on your back. Thought happened to me the other night, but I was able to open my eyes, and my brain was still dreaming so I was hallucinating like crazy while paralyzed. It was very....strange. I never thought of connecting melatonin use to it though. Wonder if that has something to do with it.

If you've used Melatonin the past without issue, I'd assume the problem is with one of the other ingredients in SleepMD. Any reason you switched from a plain Melatonin supplement to SleepMD?
I love Melatonin, as I suffer from insomnia (can't sleep until I crash, usually around 5 or 6AM), and it's the only thing I feel comfortable taking (I don't like taking 'drugs' or anything that can't be found in our bodies or in nature), and it works well to get me to that crashing point much sooner.
However, I've found that the Melatonin stays in my system long after I wake up, which keeps me in a fog for hours until it wears off. I took some at 3AM last week and it didn't wear off until 3PM, when I'd been at work for 2.5 hours already. I was miserable. Why take something to help me get to sleep a few hours earlier if I'm still going to be tired as hell in the morning?
I'm actually thinking of taking some tonight ultra early (read: before 1AM) and see how it goes.

I haven't noticed any negative side effects from taking melatonin. it typically helps me to get a good nights sleep.
I did have a friend that reported a side effect of his eyes swelling up after taking melatonin. The problem went away quickly once he stopped taking I recall him mentioning.
My girlfriend recommended that I try melatonin after I told her about my issues with insomnia. Course, I can STAY asleep just fine, it's the falling asleep that's the hard part for me. It's worked like a charm, 3mg and I'm out within 15 minutes, and I usually wake up within at least 8 hours feeling well-rested.
The only problem I have with it is timing, since I KNOW that if I take it I'm not going to be up for 8 hours, so I have to take it early at night if I have things going on in the morning.

That is what I am thinking on that. It might be either a HIGH dose of melatonin, another "supplement" they threw in there, etc. I bought a couple of different ones, with different doses to see which one worked better. The one I took originally had a dose of 3mg and said to take 2 of them 30 min before I wanted to sleep. They actually worked really well. I might try that brand again and hope for the best, but after the reaction I had to the SleepMD I am kind of gun shy ya know.
