I'm a very unhealthy eater. I know I should try eating better but I'm very picky so I'm not going to suddenly change my unhealthy eating thou I am trying to make gradual changes. I'm also very out of shape & am trying to be a little more active. I have a few different issues I'm thinking vitamins & supplements might possibly help a little. I'm not expecting a sudden or drastic improvement but a long term little improvement would be good. I'll list the issues~
OCD type stuff.
Anxiety.
possible ADHD; problems paying attention/focusing/contracting, zoning-out sometimes.
Sinuses & allergies.
Essential Tremors.
Feeling tired & worn out after doing things.
Sleep problems; problems falling asleep maybe because I cant relax & am thinking too much, toss & turn, wake up after 5 hours.
I'm taking Buspar for my anxiety & Neurontin for my OCD & they are helping & haven't really seemed to make the other issues worse but I'm a little concerned about possible long term effects. I'm thinking an antioxidant or something to help with toxins might be good. I've been recommended Vitamin C, fish-oil & Magnesium before; Would those be a good? Is there a good multivitamin I could take as well or anything else? BTW I need to avoid grapefruit stuff because of Buspar & I'd like to avoid anything that could raise my testosterone but something that reduces it would be fine.

Hiya nick007

I'm an Ocd sufferer too, along with the depression that inevitably comes with it. I got my supplement advice from 'The Depression Cure' by Stephen Ilardi.

I'm sure you know how good omega 3 is for mental health and apparently for optimum effect we need at least 1000mg of EPA and 500 mg of DHA (this might require a few capsules), best if obtained from molecularly distilled fish oils.

To get the maximum benefit from the omega 3 oils, you need to make sure you have antioxidants to protect the omega-3s as free radicals damage fish oil. You can take a multivitamin and 500 mg of vitamin C to provide antioxidants. This is especially necessary if you don't eat much fruit and veg.

A little bit of GLA is also helpful, as it reduces inflammation in your body - inflammation can contribute to mental health difficulties- plus, the body can cut down on its production of GLA when you take a lot of EPA. Apparently two big bowls of porridge is enough or you could take a 500 mg evening primrose capsule just once a week.

Vitamin D is also important for your mood, and most people don't get enough from sunlight exposure, so it's good to take 50 mg of vitamin D3 a day.

I came off fluoxetine recently as it wasn't helping me and I've seen some improvement by taking these supplements, in my general health as well as my mental health. Of course, it's not enough on it's own, but helps along the way. It helps me feel a bit more well and able to implement other positive strategies, like exercise, not ruminating, therapies, etc.

Good luck!

Asking advice on supplements and vitamins when you can't eat right is like putting scotch tape on a leaky roof.

Thanx for the great suggestions Ferkin. I was for fluoxetine for a bit along with lots of other psych meds after a mental breakdown about 9 years ago. My OCD or rather panic-attacks related to my OCD & lots of other things got to me. I learned & grew a lot sense then. I wish you the best cumming off Prozac. I was on Lexapro at the end along with a couple other meds. I weaned myself off gradually but adjusting was difficult for while after.
Anyways...
I've done a bit of research on those vitamins & I decided to try them. I found a bottle of Fish Oil off Amazon that looks good. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PDMTJC/ref ... e_3p_dp_i1 I also ordered C, Evening Primrose Oil & a couple multivitamins. One is a thing for men & the other has lots of green stuff & D. They can both be taken a couple times a day so I'll take one of one kind after I eat lunch & one of the other after I eat supper.
There is one thing I forgot to mention in my 1st post. I started taking Propecia a few months ago for male pattern hair loss. I started losing it a couple years ago & it's been getting worse fast. I haven't noticed anything with Propecia yet but that can take a while. Does anyone have any suggestions about that or any of the other things :?:

Your absolutely rite Snapcap. I really should be eating healthy & I'm starting to try & eat a little healthier.

Take a B Vitamin supp in the morning, and some ginseng. Also, drink green tea.

I've found taking vitamin D3 helpful in improving my health. It is often called the sunshine vitamin as D3 is unique in that most of this nutrient does not come from diet but from exposure to UVB rays. Since I'm not in the sun much what I'll do is take 6000ius of D3 a day to reach a testing level between 60 to 70ng/ml.

Thought this a nice article and videos about some of the benefits of taking vitamin D3.
