I have a few health problems but my osteopath gave me some asanas, or yoga postures to do to help with pain - I started these a couple of months ago and now do five minutes of yoga every morning and in the evening if possible.

It seems to have helped with my pain and also I feel healthier too.

i took up yoga a couple of years ago as a mild exercise program and i think it's one of the best things i ever did for myself. it improves my core/limb strength, balance, agility, relaxation, stress management, and reduces general clumsiness lol....i also find that when i am into a daily yoga routine i just feel generally better than i do when i don't-- i feel both more in touch with and more comfortable in my body. i think for overall health it is quite beneficial....the thing i like the best about it is that anyone can do it. you can start very simple and easy and progress at your own speed choosing from among hundreds of poses and asanas which ones you like or that suite your personality or health goals the best. you can basically construct your own practice, yoga is very "flexible" in that way (no pun intended  ).....i would highly recommend it to anyone, but most especially to those with stress and anxiety problems.

Yoga has helped me to be more flexible. I am good at some asanas and not so good at others, but they all have improved my balance, breathing and muscle tone. It has helped me to be a part of a class with a good teacher who pushes us toward improvement while making sure we don't over do it. The group atmosphere illustrates that we're not all built quite the same with some poses being easier than others for different people. We close with a good stretch and quiet meditation that contributes to a good mental state. It seems to continue to get better as my core strength builds. Cycling through a series of several sun salutations used to be very strenuous, but now it's getting to be more fun.

Yes I have found that already. I can reach up to get things more easily and I definitely feel much better.

I found some good books on it too.

I have always had trouble with balance and have not had so much improvement whilst doing yoga - I do some postures next to the armchair so that when I start to topple over I have something to either grab or fall onto lol

I got hooked to it when I was doing a high school experiment on yoga and its effects on depression. I try and do it whenever possible. But the classes are expensive. :x

just put 'rodney yee' into the search :D

they are on amazon and ebay too for between £5-10 but make sure you get a region 2 dvd (not usa region 1) as otherwise it wont play properly. I have 9 dvds of his  he even has a meditation dvd set in yosemite park, which is very beautiful and very relaxing.

Look at 'yoga journal' website as its a magazine with lots of great info :D

The findings were that for both neurotypical girls and girls like me on the spectrum (As well as ones with other non spectrum mental variations) yoga helped to lower depression symptoms and suicidal thoughts, improved appetite, and improved posture. I will have to do the experiment again some day, I used a sample group of myself and about 15 other girls, and that's not enough to prove anything definitive. It worked for me though.

Cheers lotusblossom, I already have the Yoga Journal link, great isn't it.

Thanks for the info Bluestocking. My problem was that I was always hungry and eating too much, now I don't.

I took a class for it my senior year of college, it was very much enjoyable. I wish I could have continued on with it, I'm already naturally flexible, and I'd like to build up my core strength, not to mention how great it makes my back feel. If I can't fit regular classes for it into my now-busy schedule, I might have to start using DVDs.

And Bluestocking, is that a Vladimir Kush painting? I went to one of his galleries in Vegas, very neat work.

I started a Vinyasa class two Wednesday's ago so 'no' in the sense that I'm so green that I'm not at the point where I'd call myself a yoga practitioner but 'yes' in that I have no plan not to stick with it and at worst if I feel like its a blind alley in six months I might just quit taking classes and do what I know of it at home just for the exercise when I feel like it. I do like having something strenuous on my off-days from martial arts so I like at least having *something* - if not yoga it will ultimately be something else.
