When I was 17 in college my hair was very dark brown and almost jet black. My hair was dark for the majority of my teens however now aged 23 my hair has become light. My parents pointed out too me that my hair was starting too lighten 2 years ago and they said "the older you are getting the lighter your hair is going".

Here are things I do too my hair
I go cycling everyday for a few hours and my hair was exposed too sunlight especially in the summer
I have thick hair but my hairdresser thins my hair out every couple of months
I put product in my hair such as hair mousse and occasionally hair gel

I asked my mum recently why my hair is going from dark too light and she said "you had your hair longer and thicker before" At the moment I would describe my hair as a chest nut color

I'd say from age 14-22 my hair was dark but since turning 23 recently that has changed.

Why do u think this is happening too my hair? My friends have still kept there dark hair from there teens except me......

It's pretty common for hair color to change as you get older. When we were kids, my little sister was really blonde. Now she's in her mid-20s and she has dark brown hair. I started with darkish brown and now it's nearly black. I've seen people start with dark hair that gets lighter as well, especially people who spend a lot of time in the sun. I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't like the new color you can dye it back to the old one, though that will damage the hair.

Maybe in your 30s or 40s dark hair becomes lighter but your 20s is a bit premature for that too happen?

No. I remember classmates in university complaining that they had dark hair as children which had lightened considerably. They were anywhere between 18 and 22. They were worried that they would be called "dumb blondes" if their hair got too light.

Me and my sisters both had our hair darken when we were between 17 and 22 or so. I'm only 27 and my hair is almost completely black, has been for years. I don't think it would need to be any older going from dark to light. The sun might be related but I suspect it's mostly genetic. If light hair can turn dark despite exposure to sun, what would stop dark hair from turning light?

I'd guess at it being the sunlight doing it. Especially if you use anything on your hair that has citric acid in it, that reacts with light and heat to have a bleaching effect on hair.

But some people's hair lightens a lot in sunlight and in others hardly at all.

Even a lack of sunlight makes hair lighter

Sorry to have missed the previous obvious diagnosises? I will join with them who is thinking maybe your hair is getting sunbleached. You should wear your helmet. I do not like the kind which makes folks look like wood peckers. Whats up with that? Anyway your getting too much sun. If its bleaching out your hair its also giving some nasty old skin cancers which tend to pop up down the road a bit. Humans was not designed for much Sun. Being dark complected helps. Red headed Irishmen pay the full price. When your hair quits turning blonde and starts turning loose..it's a clue for becoming a seaoned citizen ..along with missing teeth and bad eyes..needing to go wee wee at inopprotune times etc. . When you start seeing those signs..start picking out a assisted living retirement home with cute large bosomed Nursies with shapely haunches...lol. Person might have to kick in a little boot money beyond the guv'ment stipend on that deal..lol.
