the bench press...

anyways i think you all understand what im talking about. What i do is i catch one side on the safety underneath and tilt the other end away so i can get out from under.

Sometimes im not fast enough and people will catch it and scold me.

Anyways, this one fellow came up to me today and started yelling at me today.

Jesus christ man dont lift weight you cant lift. you're gonna hurt yourself wheb no ones watching. I see you doing this in the gym all the time. Jesus christ!

And this guy sounded really angry too. i think hes maybe mid20's-30's.

The thing is I had already done like 3-4 sets before (85x10,95x3,95x2)
Other thing is its ONLY 95 LBS, how do you get stronger if you dont lift as
much as you can.

Overhead press or ask for a spot before attempts you have a good chance at missing.

Benching to me feels very fish out of water. If I bench, I only do dumbbell benching since I don't wanna find people to spot me, and I prefer incline. Worst case once on an incline I just stood up with the weight and dropped it. I much prefer the overhead press as a strength exercise, much more carryover to real life, and I like the bigger shoulder look it gives vs the bench.

Push ups give the best results.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but surely lifting something that you can actually lift (as in, not drop on yourself), and increasing the number of times you lift it, would build strength?

Check craigslist for used stuff. You can find a good setup sometimes for like $150-200.

It's understandable that people would get upset so quickly over the situation given how it could potentially have a terrible outcome. If you are doing multiple sets at weight that pushes your limits you need to ask for help from others or find a smith machine with a safety on it so that you do not harm yourself. Using the pins is a clever idea but eventually you may get to the point where a pin won't be able to hold half the bar safely. I think that it is better to break the habit than let it get that far.

If you are trying to gain strength you may have to lower the weight and raise the reps or sets that you are doing for a while until you begin to understand your own limits. The most important thing about body building or lifting weights is knowing your own limits so that you do not harm yourself. It took, and still takes me on occasion, a long time because I can easily become over stimulated at the gym and lose sight of what I am doing. You must focus and take note of what you are feeling. I do understand that muscles can give out at times too so you need to take that into account as well.

The embarrassment of having the weight lifted off of you is fleeting, the pain of having weight drop on you lasts much longer.

Be safe in your endeavors!

That said you may want to look into other strength training exercises and methods such as dumbbells, cables and standard sets of 5x5.

Keep at it, don't get deterred!

Dude, if you wanna get stronger do crunches, push ups and pull ups. No risk involved, and with variety (Keyword: variety) of different movements you could get huge. That's what I did in high school. It builds strength and bulk depending on how you do them.

eventually all weight becomes so heavy that your muscles fail given enough prior fatigue. An example is me. I bench over 300(although these days ive had bad workouts who knows LOL) but anyway... i did a high rep set of 145 today and barely got 27. if i tried 28 i would have been stapled. is 145 too heavy for me? Muslimhead you are right to push yourself hard...especially since you're a noob. You are at a stage where you can't get burnt out so easily and will make good gains. pushing a weight for 5 reps is nowhere near too heavy.

I have a state of the art top of the line flat incline decline bench that cost 250....you arent that strong so a 300 pound set is fine...for 120 bucks. you can be up and rolling for 800 dollars man. Save on gas, no gym memberships, and holidays are heres.

You only lift "as much as you can" (i.e. 1 RM) when you're trying to achieve a personal record. Otherwise you only lift around 80% for optimal muscular adaptation. When you lift, as is the same with interval training, you always "leave a little bit in the tank." You never go to failure. You finish your workout not feeling like you were run-over by a truck, but instead feeling like you could have done one more rep/set.

Learn the proper tecnique. Something tells me you're lifting with your hands out to the side and not in a 45 degree angle.

You can go to failure, but that requires a spotter. Your current workout only gives you 15 reps or so. Stick with 3 x 8 x 85 or 4 x 6 x 85 for now. Maybe 5 x 5 with progressive increase is down your alley as well.
