People freaking out that I'm vegan
I've always tried to use vegan products, and most of my life I haven't eaten meat, but I'm severely allergic to casein and something in eggs(I forget?) so those have always been no-goes.
But the moment I ACKNOWLEDGED that I'm switching to a vegan lifestyle/diet, people got on the defensive. They act like I'm condemning them just by being a vegan. It's ridiculous. I have ridiculous, difficult people in my life and I know we all do, but it's like none of my friends are being laid back about this at all.
I don't talk about veganism in terms of me being a better person, I don't even talk about the moral/ethical reasons behind it, but everyone is just like "Well we NEED meat" like... I never said anyone else needed to stop eating meat or whatever.
This is just... silly. Any vegans/vegetarians that get the same crap?

The only ones I had trobules with, where my partners relatives. Not because they wouldnt understand or anything, but the are heavy flesheaters and their favorite restaurants simply have no additional meals without flesh, only side dishes. So when we went to their favorite restaurants, they didint feel well about it, because I could only eat sides dishes, and when we went to another restaurants, I didnt feel well, because they didnt go to their favorite restaurant because of me. ^^ But I dont think that flesh is disgusting or anything, I only have problems with the ecological and enomomic disadvantages of flesh, so I went from vegetarian to 1-2 times a week flesheater. (I also dont want to cook two different meals every time for my partner and me. ^^)
My friends and my partners friends also had no problems with it. So we never forced them to eat our way on their own. The only rule was: If we have a barbecue grill party and you bring flesh for the grill, then have a look on it as long as it is on the grill, because of me rarely eating flesh and never eating flesh until I was around 20, I have no skills in flesh cooking/grilling. But everyone understood that rule. ^^
I have nothing against vegans, in fact I admire their conviction. However, most vegans I have met are the militant types not too far removed from this:
http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/2 ... ous-vegan/
I draw the line at vegans who judge me for eating meat. It's the same way I feel about most religions.
That being said, you don't sound like that type of vegan so keep on rocking on! ![]()
Oh, I'm silently judging people, I just have no desire to change anyone's habits. I do think poorly of people but it's a personal thing.
It's like people want to draw the argument out and I have no interest. People are basically asking me to defend my diet and other people's words. It becomes about all of these stupid things I don't care about, like whether or not dairy and meet and eggs are healthy. I don't give a s**t if those things are healthy for the population. I just don't care.
It's like they have some idea of what I believe(it isn't hard to figure out) And they feel really insulted that I have those opinions.

I think it's because most vegans are animal activists or people who find meat cruel, and they usually were the ones who keep talking about how cruel eating meat is-- AND they are people who are VERY EXTREME, condemning people for eating meat. They even shout at meat eaters.
So usually, people have this negative stereotype towards vegans.
I think it would be much better if you tell them that you're just allergic to meat, rather than finding being an extreme animal activist?

I've literally just said "I don't like meat." When people ask why, because above all the other reasons, that one pretty much is why I don't eat meat. Even when I ate meals that contained meat I would pick the meat out and have trouble with the smell/taste of the food.
I can't just suddenly be allergic to meat, though.

So my assumption that they're basing this all on the assumption that they have magical omnivore psychic powers is the correct answer? Haha

I think when people criticize my diet and lifestyle choices I'll just assume they are delusional, sad people, and ignore them or just brush them off. You know "OK, thanks for sharing your opinion." despite not valuing their opinions at all

Magical psychic powers? No. But you admitted you judge them and think less of them - even if you aren't doing it consciously, they can likely tell this fact.
Bingo!
I do respect their autonomy, which is what I expect in return, I could care less if they don't respect my opinions. We're not in grade school, after all.

Bingo!
I think less of people who bite their nails, chew with their mouths open, or find their bodily functions such as passing gas or belching to be a source of humor in public. What makes it normal or rational to attack based on the perception that I think of those things as being pretty repugnant?
I'm assuming nothing, since no one does that.
But they launch into these ridiculous defenses of their eating habits, as if I care what leads to those behaviors.
It's really anti-social, and it seems to be the exception most otherwise tolerable people make in terms of getting on the defensive without provocation. It's sad.

When someone starts going on about why they think my diet choices are unhealthy, and attempting to convince me to eat food that makes me sick, it's like I'm hearing someone say "Farts sure are funny, how dare you not laugh at my farts, why don't you fart RIGHT NOW DO IT FARTS FARTS FARTS"
Acknowledging my veganism out loud has made me realize how pathetic some of the people around me are and how insecure they are about their own choices. Like I don't have to say anything for them to deliver me a lengthy diatribe about cave men and "canines" etc.

And three people in the last two weeks have sent me texts with images of half-slaughtered animals with jokes about it being dinner. In no other context has anyone ever sent me pictures of animals missing limbs, clearly still alive, bloodied, beaten, or tortured dogs(always a cop in those pictures) and yeah, that's super rational.
Very reasonable reaction. A cat that was burned to death was the last picture before I blocked their numbers.
I just don't see how this is an acceptable reaction to me having a different diet than them and being grossed out by their diets.
