I'm a perfectionist. It is likely the one defining personality trait I had at birth.
As such, while I'm learning to exercise, I'm afraid to exercise in public.
As you may know, findingg a private exersise place in College is nigh-impossible.
Also, most of what I'm trying to exersise for needs space - Bo Staff, Fire Dancing (Without fire), Karate, etc.
If I was somewhat more coordinated, I wouldn't mind, but I can't stand someone seeing me drop my bo staff while trying to improve my skills.
My gross motor skills suck.

What time does the gym open?
If you can, I'd recommend going at opening hour. The place will probably be less crowded then.

I used to go find unused gathering rooms in the student union building at odd hours to practice stuff like that.

Wow, fire dancing? Yeah, I can see how that would draw attention. I used to be the same way back when I ran a lot and it didn't help when I'd get the random idiot who'd blow their car horn at me and make a rude gesture, either. I really enjoyed running, though, and tried not to let other people take the enjoyment out of it for me. I hope you can do the same with your sports.

Nobody is perfect, and if you stop practicing as much, your abilities are bound to worsen. Just be happy to be where you are, doing what you do. If people are so concerned about your activity, they aren't focused enough on what they are there to do, same goes for you. If anything, use these people as motivation to better yourself.

Here's what I do:

Take dexedrine
Smoke a spliff
Put headphones on
Tune in my favourite radio station
Ignore everyone & everything else
Focus on what I'm doing & my "why," to keep me motivated by the reason(s) I'm doing what I'm doing to get myself into better shape
Remind myself of my physical goals for weight/bf%/cardio (I'm going to get to 200lbs @ 10.0%bf or less, maintain it, then improve my cardio until I can run a 6 minute mile @ 200lbs - all w/o using any weights, body weight exercises only. I should be able to nail this sometime this Summer.)

And it helps that I belong to a free 24/7 gym called OUTSIDE! :P Once every couple months I'll go for a run or workout w/ a friend, but otherwise its solo, and I enjoy my solitude. I don't care for gyms much as I don't like the same "stage fright," feelings, but they're not as bad as they used to be so I can tolerate going to one once in a blue moon.. Literally only about once a year. I may change that up a little in the future once I have a car again, as there's a nice dry sauna at a local city rec centre just a few steps from the pool. But otherwise, f gyms, I'll workout at home or outside just as well.
