For many years I went to the gym several times a week and had a very firm body. Then I gave it a rest for a couple of years. Recently I have been doing push ups at home and I was surprised how quickly my arms and chest have firmed again after only weeks.

I think doing exercise at home can be just as good as in the gym. Plus i don't pay fees and don't have to put up with the bright lights and music in the gym.

Do you think gym or home workout is better?

There is one major advantage to working out at the gym: Once you get to the gym, you WILL work out, whereas you can find many distractions at home. So if you're self motivated and have everything you need for a complete workout, I'd say stay home.

The only gyms I've ever been in were in school. There's no way I would set foot in a public one.

Bought my first weight bench at 32, along with a couple of Arnold Schwarzenegger's books, so I could learn how to do it properly without injuring myself and began developing my own routines. That was over 20 years ago. Once I got in the habit of working out every day, not only did I enjoy it, but I actually feel guilty and nervous if I'm forced to skip a day for some reason. I just wish I'd been given the opportunity to weight train in High School. I had no interest in competitive team sports, but weight training is something you can do by and for yourself. Unless you're trying to get huge and lifting enough weight to need a spotter, there's no need for anyone else to be there distracting you with mindless chatter. I do at least 90 minutes a day now, between the weights, the treadmill and alternating a couple of prerecorded ab workouts, all at home.

I do it at home, but I need to transition into workout mode.
I change into sweat wicking sleeveless tee shirt, almost knee length swim shorts - to avoid chaffing, then do 25 mins on an exercise bike and 100 crunches.
On weekends I go to the gym with my wife, but only to use the pool.
The routine and the transition are the important things, it's up to the individual what and where they do so far as workout.
In my opinion workout at home is easier, as you don't have to overcome the hurdle of going out and being around other people.
The most important thing is routine, as the cumulative effect is it reduces depression and anxiety, as well as keeping the body in shape.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with home workouts, due to cost and convenience factors, but my first choice is actually outdoors. There are a number of great parks with fitness trails near my home and office and I like to take advantage of those.

I have been in gym, but didnt like it there, half of the people were really nice normal people, but the other half somehow was creepy. If it wasnt for that, gym were better, because of them having all that gear, but it simply made no fun and so I didnt like to go there, and there is no use to gym, if you avoid going there. So workout at home is better.

I workout at a 24 hr. gym around midnight, and nobody is even there a lot of the time not even any employees. This is a good compromise between working-out at home vs. working-out at a busy gym.

If you have the weights and equipment at home and someone who can come spot you when you need it (unless you have machines where you don't need a spotter), and you know what you're doing then it might be better to do it at home. If you do it at home you can just get up and instantly go do it without dealing with going somewhere and needing extra time to get there, dress, drive home after, shower, etc. You might be more inclined to work out more often and even do some longer workouts because you can just go fall down on the couch and not have to deal with going home and all that. I'd say if you can invest in what you need and know what to do, then do it.

I prefer the gym because there isn't any equipment at home.

if I could afford the gym i'd go there. I miss my lap swimming at the YMCA but it went to $60 a month which exceeded my budget. so bye bye swimming. anyways I do my exercise outside at home. pushups, chin-ups, back arches with leg lifts, walking up and down hills [can't run anymore] and riding my trike up and down some steeper hills for interval training.

Gym. I hate my house. Also my uncle's living with me. Also there's no real room for equipment at my house.

Gym gets me out of my house I don't much like being in, gives me a lot of space to work out (full aerobic studio to myself to do plyometric/jumping stuff) and I do have some acquaintances there who are cool, and there's only like one person I only vaguely don't get along with there.

Outside is my favorite gym, but I do have troubles forming my own work outs. So for that the gym is the most effective place for my workouts.

Because of the Norwegian housing prices (hint: a mid-size apartment here is 500,000 USD), I can't afford enough space for a home gym. There's so much you can't do with just a dumbell set. There's also the price of the equipment tp take into consideration. A hammer strength bench is expensive, but a membership at my gym is just 300 USD for one year.

I don't like the gym because you have to pay plus I enjoy the fresh air when I go running and cycling.

I can never initiate contact with any of the people in the gym. :(
