I am frustrated beyond belief on the amount of junk food, people have been giving children/teens (my son). It's everywhere! My son started grade 8 this year and I thought this issue would get better but it hasn't. Both staff and students are offering my son food he's sensitive to .. regularly! He takes it because it's 'yummy' and wants to be like everyone else. He will ask people to 'borrow' money and eat their snack .. it's a growing problem.

He likes our home-made foods. He even volunteers to help out. But when in school, he is surrounded by 'opportunities' all the time. A student can not do a good deed without a pizza reward, hot dog reward, pop, candy, chocolate bars. Society as a whole is teaching our children to work for rewards and not out of kindness. You put a child with high functioning Autism into the mix, they'll thrive on those rewards .. and unfortunately, those rewards (the 'must-haves') have no nutritional value in them.

It's interesting how then, those same people, complain about childhood obesity, diabetes, mental health, etc etc etc

I hear what you're saying and think it's a problem with out culture in general. I work in an office environment and it's sort of the same deal. Every week, it's a baby shower, a birthday party, a holiday party, a bridal shower, etc. Any excuse to celebrate by eating sheet cake and they'll take it, lol. And, people look at you like you're from Mars or have two heads or something for not partaking.

Exactly!! It is a culture and people have grown to be so unaware and oblivious. My son's school raised enough funds to install filtered drinking fountains throughout the school. Their hard work was recognized and everyone applauded for their environmental approach (reducing bottled water, etc) .. and yet, they have a school store that sells junk food.
