I just found out this afternoon that PA Dept. of Public Welfare cancelled my Medicaid effective 11/04/13. I only found out because when I called my pharmacy this afternoon to refill my prescription for Lantus, and they were unable to bill my insurance. The only thing I can think of for the cancellation is I am collecting SSDI. While I am eligible for Medicare, it will not be effective until January 1, 2014. I do have a call into my caseworker at the county assistance office. What other options do I have with reinstating my insurance until Medicare takes effect. Last time I priced Lantus, it was roughly $300.00 for a 10ml vial.

if you work (SSDI recipients can make up to $1040 per month without losing their benefits), you would be eligible for MAWD - medical assistance for the working disabled. the premium would be 5% of your total income.

there's also something called a spend-down. when you spend enough on meds and healthcare that your remaining income is down to a certain level, you become eligible for Medicaid for the rest of the month. I haven't followed the amount for a few years, but I estimate it's around $900.

I finally got through to my caseworker this afternoon. Turns out my case was up for renewal, however, that paragon of government efficiency, the United States Postal Service, couldn't find their way out of a paper bag, let alone find me, after I sent them change of address forms. DPW is sending me renewal forms, and I'm going to reapply for the renewal online.

If you are 55 and over Medicaid is not a subsidy but a loan in many states. They government puts a lien on your estate. They won't touch you property when you are living in it. There are exceptions but basically when you go to a nursing home or die they get their money back from your estate. If you had catastrophic bills the money you thought you were going to give the grandkids, charity etc is government property. That is why Obamacare is so eager to get you into Medicaid if your income is low or non-existent. Again this varies by state but if you check that box "I need assistance" and your income is under a certain amount you are forced into Medicaid. The Mafia could not have done it better.

I am going to try checking no for assistance and try and in a few months apply for medicaid to pay premiums, co pays etc,. That should mean Medicaid loans me a lot less then if I am forced into Medicaid and get a long term catastrophic illness. I have no clue if this is viable.
