I was told that if you lose 10 pounds you lose a dress size. Starting tomorrow I'm starting an exercise routine and would like to lose 30 pounds by June 9th this year. If I lose 30 pounds and am currently a size 18/20 what size will I be when I lose the 30 pounds?

My guess would be about a size 14. Exercise helps, but dieting is about 80% of weight loss. Since our bodies are individual, maybe focus on being healthy vs reaching a certain number. Even when I was young and fit, I was more muscular than tiny. Good luck on your fitness journey. :)

This. If we eat well and are active, we can be any size and be healthy. Check out The Fat Nutritionist. She's gorgeous and awesome, too. http://www.fatnutritionist.com/

I aggree that diet is the main part of losing weight. Also create a healthy lifestyle you can maintain without going stir crazy instead of seeing how much weight you can lose in 6 months

Paul McKenna's book - I Can Make You Thin.

It beats everything else that's out there. It teaches you how to tell when you're really hungry, and how to eat like slim people do. It sensitizes your body to be as sensitive to food as a slim person, basically. It doesn't involve dieting, in fact he's very against diets of any kind. READ IT.

I don't even know if my body will allow me to lose weight. I'm 5'2 and 230 pounds and I carry my weight in my stomach. I started doing crunches and 20 minutes on the treadmill today. Every week I'll increase my time on the treadmill by 10 minutes until I reach 40 minutes. Then I'm doing 30 crunches in the morning and 30 at night.

My main goal is to get my stomach small enough to the point where I can actually wear dress and skirts and not looking pregnant. Even my shirts cling to my stomach. Men's shirts are a huge sensory problem and even men's shirts cling to my stomach. No matter what size top, dress or skirt I get I look pregnant and I'm sick and tired of not being able to dress like a woman and feel happy with my body. I can dress like a woman now, but I want to wear dresses.

^^^ I don't think crunches make you lose weight around your belly faster compared to other exercises. Fat is more of a storage thing for the entire body, it is not specifically used for the region it is stored in. If you used the same amount of energy by walking stairs for example, I think the result for your body would be more or less the same, the only difference being what muscles got the exercise. Of course any exercise is good, whether for losing weight or just general health.

I agree with what some of the others on this thread said, that nutrition is more important in what your weight is. There are many skinny people who are couch potatoes and never work out. I think one of the most important things to do is learn to understand the nutrition labels on the packaging. I looked at a box of a frozen pizza I ate a while ago, and it had 1000 calories. That is about half of what a person should eat in a day, and that assumes exercise. I googled how much calories you burn when jogging, and I found 400 per hour (! !!). That means 2.5 hours of jogging, and I know I could never do that in one day even when I was a kid. Of course pizza is a bit of an extreme example as that is not considered healthy food by anyone. Most of pizza is empty calories, it has little nutritional value but still makes people gain weight when they eat it often.
I think the healthiest thing to do if you haven't done it already is figure out what all the different bits mean on the label: calories, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein etc. Just check the labels when you go shopping and after a while you have a good idea what your food is made of and why some foods are not nutricious at all.

(That was a word salad)

You cannot target an area to lose weight. Crunches aren't going to help that much. In fact if your trying to lose weight you want to use AS MANY muscles as possible.

If you watch what you eat , have the right portion size and add exercise I promise you you will come to a weight your happy about. If your smart about it you will definitely succeed.

Another tip is the cheat meal where once a week you eat one serving of food you crave

Edit: in your case you might want to see a nutritionist and also have a personal trainer make you a program at the gym

Have you had ever had your hormones checked? Thyroid, cortisol, etc. If your 5'2'' and 230 then hormones may be your problem.

My weight, from what I've been told is more than likely genetic. One of my family members is two inches taller than me and is over 190.

Unlike the stereotypes of people my weight, I don't like to eat a lot. The only reason I eat is for survival. Eating is also a part of social interaction at times. Eating for pleasure isn't a good habit.

I'm not saying that you stereotyped me.

Hormone problems are alot of the time genetic. You should really think about getting them checked. For your stats(5'2'' 230) and the fact you dont overeat is a red flag for hormone problem. Hormone problems can be fixed with medication.

When I was little I was put on a med that caused precocious puberty. I started my period in 3rd or 4th grade and was a D cup in 5th grade.

I know that's personal, but I'll talk to my mom. I'm getting blood work done soon. Thank you so much.

People tell me that I don't look my weight. I'm scared!

Thanks :D

I wish that I could wear dresses and skirts without being asked if I'm pregnant. I'm ugly because I can't wear those things. Well, I can, I just look ugly in them.

Some people are predisposed to eating tiny amounts in order to stay slim.

Look at some slim people, some of them eat tons, and others hardly eat a thing. Some get full after a few mouthfuls - I'm one of them also. My problem is I get fed up of hardly being able to eat anything, I'm hardly ever hungry. So I eat for the sake of it. I really am hardly ever hungry, I don't get ravenous unless I don't eat a single thing all day until late at night, in the summer I don't get hungry even then.

That, and food for me seems the ultimate source of joy. I've found even when I use Paul McKenna's system, food is like an addiction still. I eat even though I'm not hungry. If I eat more than a sandwich, soft drink and packet of crisps a day, I put on weight. I hate not being able to eat more than that. My sister eats tons of food. I remember once she just got a plate full of halumi cheese and crisps, and just ate it all. Even a small bit of halumi cheese makes me feel sick. Note that cheese doesn't generally make me feel sick.

As for dresses, I've seen lots of fat women wear them. Unless they're massive, they usually look far better in dresses, especially as their big legs are covered. That's why I wear skirts. Bigger women generally don't look great in trousers.

I lost 30 pounds with the Four-Hour Body by Time Ferriss-I only read the chapters dealing with the "Slow-Carb Diet," and about the supplements and Kettle Bell Swings. I maintained this diet for 2 years. It is four years later and I am still at my thinnest, but I no longer do the Slow Carb Diet as I am now strength training and I have joined a rowing team (crew) so I need a higher amount of carbs for fuel.

The Slow Carb Diet will allow you to rapidly lose fat while not depriving yourself, but you must follow the directions exactly.

In the end, good old science holds true, strength training, a balanced diet with very little amounts of refined carbs and very little sugar and you will lose weight. The slow carb diet will propel your weight loss, and while the pounds are falling off you can reexmine your relationship with food, so that you can maintain your new weight.
