I am having a colonoscopy in a few days. :skull:

I am most concern about the sedation affects both during and after the procedure. As with some others with autism, I often respond in unique and unpredictable ways to drugs. Also the recovery journey sounds unpleasant. My psychologist is trying to convince me to have the anesthesia and enjoy the "high" that comes from it. But I don't like the feeling of being out of control.

:?: Is sedation even needed? I understand in Europe, colonoscopies are routinely performed without anesthesia. :?: For those that have through gone a colonoscopy without being sedated, what was the feeling/pain like?

:?: What was the recovery like?

I had one 2 years ago. I was sedated. The procedure and recovery went without incident.

colonoscopy without anesthesia is like severe gas pains, very crampy.

Considering I just had a colonoscopy a little over a month ago, the sedation is the LEAST of your worries. It's the pre-procedure prep that will drive you bonkers, with projectile diarrhea every 5 minutes.

For me, the worst part was the concoction I had to drink (which triggered the projectile diarrhea). I almost gagged while drinking it.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond. My concerns about the procedure are mostly relieved. Now I am worried about the prep. :(
