Chronic back spasms?
A few years ago I was diagnosed with Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction. Which basically means that my hips and sacrum are not where they are supposed to be. My right ilium has been (extremely) twisted out of alignment for as long as I can remember. It could be congenital. I did not feel the effects of it being out of place until I was an adult. Due to my age, my sacrum has "set" and is no longer pliable. When I sit, my tailbone stays in place (because the joint is pretty much frozen), and does not rotate under like it is supposed to. It also causes severe sciatica.
Due to my hips being out of alignment, my spine is out of alignment as well. If I'm not careful, it can result in a gnarly back spasm or slipped disc. Typically in the thoracic spine. When I went to the doctor to figure out what to do, they simply ordered physical therapy. They said that I just have to "strengthen the muscles around the joints to hold them in place properly." Unfortunately, where I am, most medical professionals don't care about the individuals needs. They just treated me like an injury patient that could be "cured" with physical therapy. PT never worked for me, so I started doing yoga on a daily basis. It has helped tremendously, however my hip is still extremely out of place. I have a back spasm about once a month or so, but when I do have one, it is debilitating. The first one actually landed me in the hospital.
I was prescribed Valium to relax the muscles when I have an episode. I don't like taking medications though, so I'm looking for a better way to manage this whole situation. The doctors around here rarely listen to the individual's needs. I'm so sick of seeing doctors that just disregard the issue, or simply treat the symptom with drugs. The first doctor that I saw basically told me it was my own fault for not having strong enough muscles to hold it in place!
I've tried: strengthening my spine/hip muscles, hot/cold therapy, getting in a really hot bath as soon as it happens, drugs obviously, PT, yoga, popping the SI joint to relieve pressure, chiropractic adjustments including electrotherapy to loosen muscles (I immediately lose my adjustment when I stand back up), I've even tried natural means of anti-inflammatories to alleviate the spinal inflammation. I just feel like I'm at a dead end for success with this.
Long story long, I want my hip to be where it is supposed to be, but I am not sure if that can happen. In the meantime I'm trying to find ways to eliminate the back spasms, or at the minimum, treat them successfully on my own.
Has anyone had success with managing back spasms? Given my situation, what other alternatives do you think would be good?
Thanks for reading
