1. See if you can get out of that other gym contract. $100 a month makes no sense if you can't use it.
2. On Planet Fitness....
I call it a gym for (insert slang for plural female genitalia). On the good side... It's CHEAP. Lots of cardio equipment and enough weight equipment if all you want is quick and basic strength training. If you opt for the premium membership, the tanning privileges pretty much make it cheaper than having a separate place for tanning.
On the bad side... The business model caters to fat and lazy people who are intimidated about doing most anything to get healthy and strong. They have a long list of lawsuits and complaints for blatantly discriminatory behavior. I know all gyms benefit when people sign up and never show up...it's money coming it but no wear and tear on the equipment. However, having Tootsie Rolls at the counter? Pizza day? Bagel day?
They are "enablers" for bad behavior. Add in their stupid "Lunk Alarm" that goes off when any unapproved behavior goes on (people have had it go off for exhaling too loud), and it's just over-the-top stupid. Hell, they've told people to leave the gym for dressing too "sexy" (we're talking sports bras and Under Armour which is common at most any other gym) because it "intimidates" the other gym users. They advertise the "Judgment Free Zone" but they are anything but "Judgment Free."
I suppose it doesn't hurt to give it a shot. If it works for your needs, it's good. If you feel you are outgrowing it, you will need to find a "serious" gym to meet your needs.
For what it's worth, I was hired to work at a new Planet Fitness. I was fired after 4 days because they felt I was too "fitness minded" to work for them.
All the people I saw working there, if they were physically fit, DID NOT look the part (mostly women). The guys were beanpoles with piercings or pudgy. Not one fit man behind the counter.
