I guess everyone's "internal clock" is different, and I wouldn't be surprised if our cycles are something we're born with.
In my case I'm at my weakest pointe both mentally and physically between 6AM and 7AM. My most energised times are between 9PM and 11PM, thus I'm an "evening person". Fortunatly I now have a work shift that lets out at 11PM or Midnite, so I can go home and stay up until about 4AM, allowing me to reach a deep sleep by that most evil hour of 6AM (MT). I've discovered that if I can sleep deeply during 6, 7, and 8 o'clock in the morning, I can feel as rested after only 6 hours of sleep the same way I would getting a full 8, but having to wake up at 6AM.
