Boron is believed by some to be useful for building strong bones, treating osteoarthritis, as an aid for building muscles and increasing testosterone levels (although there is some concern that doses over 20 mg per day might harm a man’s ability to father a child) and for improving thinking skills and muscle coordination.
Boron is also believed by some to increase estrogen levels in healthy men ("Moobs", anyone?). Estrogen is thought to be helpful in maintaining healthy bones and mental function.
Large quantities of boron can cause poisoning. Signs of poisoning include skin inflammation and peeling, irritability, tremors, convulsions, weakness, headaches, depression, diarrhea, vomiting, and other symptoms. There is no Recommended Daily Allowance for boron since an essential biological role for boron has not been identified.
