Autism Spectrum Disorders and Ayurveda
Hi.
I have searched Wrong Planet forums and found quite a bit on Ayurveda but wish to dedicate a thread to it so people who are as interested as I am can find it easily.
"What's Ayurveda?" - India's traditional, natural system of medicine that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. Ayurveda provides an integrated approach to preventing and treating illness through lifestyle interventions and natural therapies. ...

It works on the premise of there being three doshas (body types), being Vata, Pitta and Kapha; there are also a number of combinations of the doshas. Here is a link to a test one can do to find out which dosha one is - http://doshaquiz.chopra.com/
From what I have read, Ayurveda considers Autism to be a Vata condition. I can't elaborate on that because I still don't understand that much about the connection except through my own experiences. Certainly, from all I have read on these forums regarding dietary interventions and combined with all I have learned about Ayurveda and Vata, there appears to be a very strong link. Hence my post here.
I first had a serious problem with constipation two years ago and took on Ayurveda as my chosen path to health. It was soon obvious I had what's known as a Vata imbalance ie. my lifestyle had too much Vata influence. I moved regularly, was very active and unsettled, anxious, preferred high risk occupations and sports, ate lots of dry foods, listened to fast music and generally did not do loving things for myself.
I have since learned so much about diet particularly and noticed that as I "pacify" the Vata in my lifestyle, the things which bother me as someone with AS have become far less bothersome also.
The correlation between Vata and AS have become blatantly obvious in the last few days as I have discovered, by luck, the benefits of cocoa in improving digestion, appetite and elimination. (I believe it is the Magnesium in the cocoa which is the active ingredient in this case). My experience of extreme sensitivity to people, noise, commotion etc has abated nicely. I still prefer to be alone but do not react so negatively nor do I have bad feelings about people.
I really hope that others can benefit from this post and please feel free to ask me anything Ayurveda related. Please also feel free to post your own experiences related to Ayurveda.
Thank you,
