So I tried a thing I've read of where you get some steaming water, and put your face over it and cover your head with a towel to breath in the steam. However I added tea tree, wintergreen mint(I think) and clove essential oil as well as a packet of cayenne pepper flakes they give when you order pizza(as I don't have a jar of cayenne pepper on hand) and some garlic powder. I will certainly use this in the future, though I may get some cayenne pepper essential oil and garlic essential oil instead of the seasoning as it would be a bit more potent. Also probably peppermint instead of the wintergreen mint because its more potent.
But yeah either way garlic, clove, cayenne pepper, tea tree oil and mint seems to be a really good steaming combo to clear out the grossness and get back to breathing normally. That and a little Guaifenesin(breaks up mucus congestion) syrup helps quite a bit...specifically just guaifenesin though if the medicine includes a cough suppresant then it will be kind of counterproductive.

You should see a doctor to rule out pneumonia, or some type of bacterial infection.
I can't take anything with guaifenesin in it, as it cramps up my intestines. It also doesn't stop the coughing, just loosens the mucus and phlegm, which is why it should never be used with a cough suppressant, as they work against each other. What I need when I get colds, is a cough suppressant to keep me from hacking myself to death.
I have allergies that give me post nasal flood all the time, and after several decades of life I finally found something to help with that. I take an allergy med at bed time, when I need it the most, as the angle of my head when sleeping makes the flood of phlegm cause me to cough even worse then. It got so bad last year that it was keeping me from sleeping. Now that I use the allergy med I can get the sleep I need. There are several over-the-counter allergy formulas out there. If you are interested in using them you should try each one to see which helps the most. That's what I did.
As for the formula you are planning on making, I'd go very easy on the pepper, as it can cause your sinuses to swell up from the irritation it causes, and can cause more mucus. That's why they use it in things like Mace.
