The only threads I could find about Tinnitus seem to be ten years old. If there's a newer one, please merge this.

I know Tinnitus can't be cured, but has anyone found relief or a way to help at all?

I've had it 24/7 for over ten years and I even hear it in my dreams. I've learned to ignore it to an extent but sometimes it's just unbearable. I know what makes it worse for me (salt, refined sugars, fatigue, etc), but the only thing I know that helps a bit is to have a long shower. I can't live in the shower. I've tried all the minerals and naturopathic remedies to no avail, and I'm not into white noise or wearing earbuds.

Please use this thread for suggestions, or just for ranting about your T.

I practically meditate and sleep with it. By intentionally focusing at it.

It's not actually similar to the sensation or act of listening to speech or music or eavesdropping.

But more like 'watching' a weird nonvisual loop in the background. It slightly changes as my 'mind' closest to 'hearing' moves in certain 'directions'.
Sorry, I don't have the words for that.

Otherwise, I'm not sure. Never reacted badly towards it my whole life.
Not even during those weird times where my hearing goes near non-existent for several seconds.

I had tinnitus in one ear for a month after a piece of qTip was flushed out of my ear. When it got stuck in there it was harder to hear out of that ear & felt clogged & I suddenly had tinnitus then. My ear or perhaps both had been itching a lot for a few days before & after so I had used qTips a bit but I did not notice problems rite after using them so I didn't suspect that anything could be stuck in there. I went to the health center after a couple days of it & it was too deep in there to use tools to pull it out so my ear got flushed. It took a month before my ear was back to normal thou. I'm not suggesting that's what's going on with you Isabella but if somebody just suddenly noticed tinnitus in one ear it might would be a good idea to get it checked out by a doc. I very occasionally have tinnitus in both ears when I'm trying to sleep but I've been very occasionally having that for a long time before the qTip thing. I also very occasionally notice tinnitus after having my headphones on a while listening to music but I usually keep the volume kinda low. I sometimes get spam emails for a supplement called Tinnitus 911 but those emails go straight to my spam folder & requesting to be unsubscribed does not get me off of their lists so I am NOT recommending that supplement. I'm just tossing it out there incase a reader might be interested in trying but I would highly recommend doing research before trying that supplement or any others.

Thanks, Nick.

Unfortunately I've been to several ENT doctors, audiologists, and neurologists etc. I was very hopeful in the beginning that they'd find something deep in my ears but nope ... never an answer. Mine is bilateral meaning it's both ears and it seems to be my whole brain making the noise. You know the way your thoughts just sound like they're from your brain, and not from your ears? That's how this is. My brain is just constantly full of mosquitoes. On helium. Mating with bumblebees. In a tin can. With radioactive sand poured on top. And some fax machine squonk sounds added in just for variety.

I must admit I had seen OZZY in concert just a couple of days before it started. The thing is that I didn't have any ringing in my ears after the concert, or the next day, or the next day ... but then BAM! It started and never stopped. The audiologist said my hearing is fine and I don't seem to have hearing damage from OZZY, but who knows.

I guess if I had to blame someone for this, he's worth it. OK, almost worth it.

I get it often. I can hear it now. It goes much louder in a partial shutdown and louder still in a full shutdown, and it stays for hours after a partial or full shutdown.
Somehow, apart from shutdowns, I can hear it more when someone mwntions it then if I am not thinking about it. Is it the same with you?

Possible solution. I know this may sound unusual, but I have heard some say that when they have had deliverence, they have said that tinitus also left them, so maybe prayer helps? God can do the impossible after all!

I've habituated to the sound for the most part, but I was suicidal from it for the first year or two. If I wasn't a mother I don't know if I would have kept going.

Now there are definitely times when I'm not thinking about it, or it doesn't bother me as much - but it's always there. I can even hear it in my dreams. I'll be in a dream saying to someone "Can you hear that? Can you please stop it for me?"

Right now I can't even remember what silence sounds like, but it's not the end of the world anymore. It's just annoying because it's 24/7.

I just can't believe they can put a person on the moon, but they can't figure out how to stop this very common affliction.

I do pray, MG. I can't say I've ever asked for anything for myself in my prayers, but maybe it's worth a shot.

Thanks.

I wonder if perhaps the brain or nervous system is being overactive in a way. Perhaps something like Klonopin or Neurontin/Gabapentin would help. That's just an outside the box idea & I'm just speculating. BTW I was listening to Ozzy yesterday  I never been to a concert thou, not my thing.

Do you know anyone who God uses in deliverence? It might be worth a try? (If it does not work then you are no worse off so it is worth a try).

It could be? Brain working overtime? Maybe tinitus is the whistling sound of the turbo in ones brain? :D

But it could be? Who knows.

I do, but again I'm not one to make such requests.

Actually someone just texted me to get in touch, last weekend. But it would seem odd to mention this? I think?

Mention it anyway. Maybe it is Gods timing! What do you have to loose? The worst that could happen is nothing or someone thinks you are crazy but if they think that they are crazy for thinking that.... (If that makes sense?)

Yeah tinnitus is not very well understood rite now. Some think it's unrelated to problems with the ears & that it could be a nervous system or overactive brain thing. I didn't do much research on it thou. I've been taking Gabapentin for my OCD for the last 9 years & I still developed tinnitus for a month after my ear was flushed. Perhaps my tinnitus woulda been worse if I hadn't been on the Gabapentin but I would bet that if it does help it would be hit & miss for people. I just remembered that I read something about tricyclic antidepressants potentially helping. What I read did not mention specific 1s thou, just said TCA antidepressants. I find that kinda odd cuz the tca Doxepin/Silenor can cause tinnitus. My girlfriend has been on Doxepin a while & she noticed background noises more when the dosage was higher. She's sensitive to noises anyways thou & there is some machinery constantly running off in the distance where we live now & the noise bothered her more when she was on a higher dose of Doxepin. That's why we looked that side-effect up. I'm suddenly wondering what other psych or other types of meds can potentially cause tinnitus :chin:

Funny you mention Gabapentin. I took it for a few years for trauma-related pain. The tinnitus had already started when I took it, but I don't recall it helping in any way. Gabapentin actually caused me pretty severe depression. The only thing I take that kind of helps my tinnitus, is Magnesium.

What dose of magnesium do you take for your tinnitus? The fact that magnesium helps is interesting, I haven't heard of that before.
